SSE shares, which fluctuated between $ 6 and $ 10 for most of last year, closed Friday at $ 10. EchoStar closed at $ 23.38.
(Washington Post. 1996.)

New York stocks fluctuated violently Monday as the Dow shed early gains and ended down on a stronger dollar.

hit the ceiling

Even before this year's surge in oil prices, there were gloomy industry predictions that world oil output would soon hit a ceiling. U.S. benchmark crude hit a record high on Thursday, propelled by Libyan threats of possible supply cuts, closing at $139.64 a barrel, up more than threefold since 2004.
(Associated Press. 2008.)

There is growing conviction in solid waste circles that conventional recycling has gone about as far as it's likely to go without fundamental, society-wide changes. "Communities like Seattle and Minneapolis have expended a lot of resources and hit a ceiling at around the 60 percent recycling rate," says Sheehan. "Going beyond that is very difficult, and the primary barriers are the lack of manufacturer responsibility and the non-level playing field that subsidizes wasting."

National Weather Service specialist Stuart Seto says temperatures will hover in the mid-60s to low 70s Tuesday and dip slightly on Wednesday.
(San Jose Mercury News. October 26, 2009.)

Crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange has risen to hover around US$80/barrel, its highest level in a year.
(A news article from plastemart.com. October 25, 2009.)

However, the energy market seems evermore divorced from supply/demand fundamentals. Take the current poor economic climate; as crude oil prices hover between US $60 to $70 per barrel, analysts question the higher price rationale despite favorable supply to demand ratio with record high inventories.

American Heritage

A level of excellence

Mozilla tests the water with Raindrop email filter

Mozilla has asked developers to build applications for a new open-source email management project called Raindrop.

Raindrop 0.1 is still very much in its infancy, but will allow users to filter their inbox so that the most pressing emails are brought to immediate attention and those from mailing lists are sidelined.
(PC Authority. October 26, 2009.)

A show has to have an arc, a beginning, middle and end, " she explained over lunch at the Clift Hotel. " Some songs work at the start that don't work at the end. I try for a meeting quality, which is what the first few moments are like with an audience. You can't start with an intense song like' The Thrill Is Gone' or' You've Changed.' The audience gets resistant. Poignant or plaintive will work in the beginning, but not pain. " To test the water, she may sing a light or sardonic tune near the top.
(San Francisco Chronicle. 1990.)

"expose the myth of..."

"expose the myth"

Researchers expose the myth of 'disappearing' puppy fat

The concept of childhood "puppy fat" that disappears in teenage years is a myth, researchers say. Children who are overweight or obese at 11 remain so through adolescence and probably into adulthood, a study in the British Medical Journal found.

Experts said obesity was established earlier than previously thought and dismissing the problem as puppy fat could have serious health implications later. More than a quarter of children in the UK are overweight or obese and the proportion has trebled in the past 20 years.
(The Independent. May 5, 2006.)
