水が決める重要性 ― water

"water"なんて、分かりきった単語でしょうか？

勿論、“水、ウォーター”という意味においては解説の必要もない単語だと思います。水の組成や物理的性質を科学的に論じるのでなければ・・・。

しかし、このwaterという単語、単なる物理的な水に関連する意味の他にも様々な意味があります。試しに、お手元の英和辞典をチェックしてみて下さい。

“水”が我々の生活は言うまでもなく、あらゆる活動やモノに不可欠な存在であることは論を待たないと思います。お酒の美味しさを決定するのも、米のみならず水が重要な役割を果たすと言いますし、工業製品などの製造工程では、不純物を取り除いた純水が重要と言われています。

waterのレベルが下がると品質に影響する、とも言えそうです。

このような観点から派生した意味なのだと思いますが、"water"には、一般的な意味でのレベル（優秀さの度合い）といった意味で用いられている例があります。

American Heritageでは以下のような定義があります。

今日見たGoogle NewsのSci/Techでは、見出しに使われていました。


Mozilla tests the water with Raindrop email filter

Mozilla has asked developers to build applications for a new open-source email management project called Raindrop.

Raindrop 0.1 is still very much in its infancy, but will allow users to filter their inbox so that the most pressing emails are brought to immediate attention and those from mailing lists are sidelined.

少し意味合いが違ってくるかも知れませんが、下記のような実例にもあたりました。


A show has to have an arc, a beginning, middle and end, " she explained over lunch at the Clift Hotel. " Some songs work at the start that don't work at the end. I try for a meeting quality, which is what the first few moments are like with an audience. You can't start with an intense song like' The Thrill Is Gone' or' You've Changed.' The audience gets resistant. Poignant or plaintive will work in the beginning, but not pain. " To test the water, she may sing a light or sardonic tune near the top.

この場合の"water"には、“その場の雰囲気”というような意味合いもあるように思われるのですが、辞書のエントリとしては見当たりません。もしかしたら、聴衆の“レベル”ということなのかも知れません。

いずれにしても、関心のあるものについて、“品定め”する行為、その対象が"water"なのではないかと思われます。

ちなみに、"fast water"は、一級品のことを指します。特に宝石などについて用いる表現のようですが、"water"（水）が品質上重要な位置を示すということから敷衍される意味だと解釈されます。
