SMOKE AND MIRRORS: Can you quit with e-cigarettes?
Last September, NT freelance journalist Laurel May decided she'd finally had enough of smokes. So she thought she'd give e-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes that produce a smoke-like vapour) a go.
They didn't work so well for her, but she's one of many Aussies who have turned to e-cigarettes to try and ditch the durries.
Leading drug and medical authorities have issued powerful warnings to news.com.au that the products aren’t safe.
(Daniel Piotrowski. SMOKE AND MIRRORS: Can you quit with e-cigarettes? Herald Sun. September 26, 2012.)
Can you quit with e-cigarettes?"
Merriam Websterによると、
something intended to disguise or draw attention away from an often embarrassing or unpleasant issue —usually hyphenated when used attributively
The expression may have a connotation of virtuosity or cleverness in carrying out such a deception.

Andy Williams, the affable, boyishly handsome crooner who defined both easy listening and wholesome, easygoing charm for many American pop music fans in the 1960s, most notably with his signature song, “Moon River,” died on Tuesday night at his home in Branson, Mo. He was 84.
(Anita Gates. Andy Williams, Crooner of ‘Moon River,’ Dies at 84. The New York Times. September 26, 2012.)
Andy Williams, Crooner of Moon River
Crooner is an American epithet given to male singers of pop standards, mostly from the Great American Songbook, either backed by a full orchestra, a big band or by a piano. Originally it was an ironic term denoting an emphatically sentimental, often emotional singing style made possible by the use of microphones.
(Wikipedia
one who croons; especially: a singer of popular songs

― loo
Gardy loo!
Patients didn't have loo paper and soap
The Seshego Hospital near Polokwane is in hot water for not providing patients with toilet paper and soap.
The shocking – and unhygienic – practice was discovered by the MEC for social development, Norman Mabasa, during an unannounced visit to the hospital last Thursday.
(Patients didn't have loo paper and soap. The New Age. September 24, 2012.)
LOO Connect, a new part of the Restroom Association of Singapore's toilet.org.sg website, lets the public pinpoint and comment on commodes and see those given three, four or five stars under the Happy Toilet Programme that has run since 2003.
(Website lifts the lid on Singapore's best and worst toilets. Reuters. September 19, 2012.)
Let's Observe Ourselves

― twiddle
I know it’s politically incorrect to suggest that kids jump up from a sedentary game of chess and partake in a round of active video game boxing, but the latter activity might actually burn enough calories to quality as a form of exercise.
That’s the finding of a study published Monday in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine in which 18 children ages 11 to 15 tried out boxing and dancing on Kinect for the Microsoft Xbox 360. They found that the games increased calorie-burning by 150 percent for the game Dance Central and 263 percent for Sports Boxing, which burned up to 172 extra calories per hour compared with when they were sitting and playing a traditional video game.
(Deborah Kotz. Active video games such as Kinect burn enough calories to qualify as exercise, study suggests. The Boston Globe. September 24, 2012.)
And, no, he doesn’t endorse Kinect over Wii, but he does think kids should be encouraged to choose video games that get them up and moving rather than sedentary gaming that, he wrote, “typically involves no more than the twiddling of thumbs.”
(ibid.)

iPhone 5、地図アプリの欠陥 ― canary in the coal mine
If Steve Jobs were still alive, would the new map application on the iPhone 5 be such an unmitigated disaster? Interesting question, isn't it?
As Apple's chief executive, Jobs was a perfectionist. He had no tolerance for corner-cutting or mediocre products.
No doubt, the iPhone 5, which went on sale on Friday, will be another hit. Apple's halo remains powerful. But there is nothing about it that is especially innovative. Plus, of course, it has that nasty glitch. In rolling out a new operating system for the iPhone 5, Apple replaced Google's map application — the mapping gold standard — with its own, vastly inferior, application, which has infuriated its customers. With maps now such a critical feature of smartphones, it seems to be an inexplicable mistake.
And maybe that's all it is — a mistake, soon to be fixed. But it is just as likely to turn out to be the canary in the coal mine. Though Apple will remain a highly profitable company for years to come, I would be surprised if it ever gives us another product as transformative as the iPhone or the iPad.
(Joe Nocera. Has Apple Peaked? The Sydney Morning Herald. September 24, 2012.)
(it is likely to turn out to be) the canary in the coal mine
