電子タバコは有益か？ ― smoke and mirrors

このブログで以前も取り上げたことのある、“電子タバコ”（e-cigarette）に関する記事を見つけました。早速下記に引用してみます。

オーストラリアでの話ですが、そもそも電子タバコが禁煙に有効なのかどうかが議論になっているようです。また、主に輸入品に関してですが、電子タバコの安全性も疑問視されています。

タイトルに、"Can you quit with e-cigarettes?"とありますし、記事も読んでいけば内容も明らかです。

ただよく分からなかったのが、タイトルの最初にある、"SMOKE AND MIRRORS:"という部分でした。これはどういう意味かご存知でしょうか？

私はこの表現を知らなかったのですが、"smoke"はタバコの煙と繋がるのですが、"mirrors"が何のことか分からず、しばし考え込みました。

が、分からず辞書を引いたのですが、"smoke and mirrors"とはアメリカ英語の俗語表現で、


巧妙なうそ、ごまかし


を意味する表現なのです。何故、"smoke"と"mirrors"なのでしょうか？これは手品師が手品を見せる時に煙（スモーク）を使ったり、鏡を使ったりして、巧妙に見ている人を騙すことから来ているそうです。従って、タバコの煙とは関係ありませんでしたが、恐らく記事の内容とかけているのでしょう。

Merriam Websterによると、


something intended to disguise or draw attention away from an often embarrassing or unpleasant issue —usually hyphenated when used attributively


と解説されています。“巧妙さ”というのは、不都合な事実から目を逸らせるそのやり方について言っているもので、Wikipediaによると、


The expression may have a connotation of virtuosity or cleverness in carrying out such a deception.


ということですから、単に人を騙したり、嘘をついたりする行為というよりも、そのやり方の“巧妙さ”に焦点が置かれている表現であると言えます。
