sanguine

Evidence is mounting that Omicron’s new sister variant, known as BA.2, is more transmissible than the original strain but at this stage does not appear to be more vaccine-evasive.

The subvariant BA.2 is one of at least three sub-lineages of Omicron, the strain of COVID-19 first spotted in Africa in late November and now dominant around much of the world.

While rare in Australia and most other countries – the virus is found in about 2 per cent of local samples – BA.2 has started to gain a serious foothold in England, India and Denmark, where it has out-competed Omicron and now makes up most viruses sampled.

“Nothing ominous has come out so far. There is no reason to panic,” said Professor Seshadri Vasan, who has been tracking COVID-19’s variants at the CSIRO.

‘No reason to panic’: Scientists sanguine about Omicron’s new sister

Shit happens!

Sarah Palin dined outdoors at a Manhattan restaurant Wednesday evening, two days after the unvaccinated former vice presidential candidate tested positive for COVID-19.

Palin, 57, ate at Elio’s on the Upper East Side in a heated outside structure, the restaurant confirmed to The Post. Her viral outing — which ran afoul of federal quarantine guidelines — was first reported by Mediaite.

A staffer at the Italian eatery was dismissive of the incident when reached by The Post.

“S– happens! People come to eat, we are not the border police,” a worker said.
(Jesse O’Neill. Sarah Palin dines outside at Manhattan restaurant after testing positive for COVID-19. New York Post. January 26, 2022.)

“S– happens! People come to eat, we are not the border police”

Shit happens!

too big for one’s britches

唐突ですが、"too big for one’s britches"という表現をご存知でしょうか?

It was recently announced that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk would be making his hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live" on May 8.  The decision apparently caused a disconnect with cast members, who took to Twitter to express their opinions.

Behind-the-scenes tension is still present in the hours ahead of the show, according to the New York Post. An unnamed industry source who said they know the show intimately told the outlet the new cast "are getting a little too big for their britches."

The criticism from cast members came after the announcement that Musk would host the show. The CEO then tweeted: "Let's find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is."
(Zahra Tayeb. 'SNL' cast members have been accused of 'getting a little too big for their britches' by an industry insider, following swipes at Elon Musk. Insider. May 8, 2021.)

too big for one’s pants
too big for one’s trousers

too big for one’s boots

bank on

The next Covid-19 variant that will rise to world attention will be more contagious than omicron, but the real question scientists need to answer is whether or not it will be more deadly, World Health Organization officials said Tuesday.

She (=Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's Covid-19 technical lead) warned against buying into theories that the virus will continue to mutate into milder strains that make people less sick than earlier variants.

"There is no guarantee of that. We hope that that is the case, but there is no guarantee of that and we can't bank on it," she said, noting that people should heed public safety measures in the meantime.
(Dawn Kopecki. The next Covid variant will be more contagious than omicron, but the question is whether it will be more deadly, WHO says. CNBC. January 25, 2022.)

we can't bank on it

epithet

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden used an epithet to describe a reporter who shouted a question about inflation during a White House meeting with members of his Cabinet on competition and pricing.

Fox News' Peter Doocy asked the president whether he thought inflation would be a "political liability" ahead of November's midterm elections. Biden's reaction was caught on a hot mic.

"That's a great asset, more inflation," Biden said. "What a stupid son of a b----."
(Courtney Subramanian. President Biden caught on hot mic calling reporter a 'stupid son of a b----' over inflation question. USA Today. January 24, 2022.)
