MOT

昨日は定期健康診断でした。予約が混み合っているということで正午過ぎからの検査スタートでしたが、前日の夕食以降絶食となり、さすがに空腹を覚えました。

アラフィフともなると色んなところで数値が悪くなってきます。

ということで、健康診断（health check）の話題から引用です。

記事の中で、

MOT

という略語が出てきます。"midlife MOT"とありますが、話題から健康診断のことを言っているのだろうとは想像がつきますが、何の略なのか分かりません。

記事中、MOTが多数出てきますが、どこにもそれを説明したものが無いのです。

同様の話題の記事を検索してみますが、MOTは敢えて説明を必要としない、当たり前の用語なのか、その展開形を併記しているものは少ないようです。

ところで、色々な記事を見ていると、健康診断をクルマの車検に例えたものがちらほら。（車検を健康診断に例えるのが普通で、逆じゃないの！？という声がありそうですが。）

実のところ私も昨日の健康診断でそう思った（車検を思い出した）ものです。ちょうど自家用車が古くなって、色々不調が出てきていることもあって、車検も健康診断も同じだよなぁ、と。

英和辞書には、MOTは、

Ministry of Transportation

つまり運輸当局の略であり、MOT testとは車検のことを指す、とあります。

健康診断を指すMOTは、車検を意味する"MOT test"からきたものであると説明するサイトがありました。（ということは、健康診断を車検に例えるのはあながち逆ではなかった！？ということに・・・）

その一方で、MOTを、

の頭文字をとったもの、と説明するサイトもいくつか見られます。

どうでも良いような気もしますが、どちらが正しいのでしょうか！？

昨日のMOTの結果が気になります。また再検査になるんだろうなぁ・・・。

富豪と結婚したという女性が、1日にウン百万を平気で消費するというSNSの投稿で話題です。

金持ちになりたいかと問われれば、そりゃそうだと答える人がほとんどでしょうが、それは自慢したいがためでしょうか。

braggadocious

という単語を初めて見ましたが、そのスペルから、自慢（brag）と関係があるのだろうと想像がつきます。

この"braggadocious"というのは、

braggadocio

という単語の形容詞形です。

そして、"braggadocio"というのは自慢屋、ホラ吹きのことで、16世紀の英詩人Edmund Spenserが作品の登場人物に使ったものだそうです。

自慢するという意味の"brag"から来ていることは言うまでもありません。

dead to rights

機密文書の不正な持ち出し疑惑で訴追されているトランプ元大統領に、新たに不利な証拠が示されました。

トランプ氏自身が機密文書についてコメントしている録音テープの存在が明らかになったというもので、録音の内容からはトランプ氏が文書の機密性を認識しながら、その内容を本来共有するべきでない相手に語っていたことが明るみになっています。

CNN on Monday aired audio of Trump claiming after he left the White House that he possessed classified documents about potential attacks on Iran. He also admitted that he had not declassified them before leaving office, undermining his defense that everything he took to Mar-a-Lago was automatically declassified when he removed it from the White House.

つまりトランプ氏は自身が持ち出した文書が機密文書であることを知った上で不適切な取り扱いをしている認識があったということで、確信犯であったことを示す証拠テープが明らかになったということです。

本文にありますように、まさしく"smoking gun"なのですが、続く部分に、

とあります。

"dead to rights"というフレーズは慣用句で、"bang to rights"とも言います。Collins Cobuild Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

If you have got someone bang to rights, you have got enough evidence against them to accuse them of a crime and to prove that they are guilty. 

つまり、"have someone dead to rights"とは相手を糾弾するのに十分な証拠を押さえた、追い詰めた、という意味合いです。

訴追の行方、大統領選への影響が注目されます。

タイトル、それから本文に、

keying a car

という部分がありますが、ここでの"key"の意味が最初分かりませんでした。

キー、つまり鍵を意味する"key"に違いありません。続く部分に、

vandalism/malicious injury to property for allegedly scratching a Nissan

とあることから、"keying"とは恐らくクルマのキーでキズをつける行為を意味する動詞なのだろうと想像はつきます。

果たして辞書を引いてみると、その通りの定義がちゃんと載っていますので、ちょっとびっくりです。（研究社の新英和大辞典には載っていませんが。）

ランダムハウス英和ではアメリカ英語の俗語表現とあります。

Online Etymology Dictionaryによれば、初出は1986年頃ということです。

climacteric

ラジオを聞いていましたら、更年期の話題でした。

英語で更年期を何と言うかご存知でしょうか？

女性の閉経を"menopause"といい、更年期とも訳されますが、男性にも等しく訪れる「更年期」を指すのには"climacteric"が用いられます。

スペルから、"climax"（クライマックス）を思い出した方、その通りです。

"climacteric"はラテン語climacter、climax（クライマックス、極点）からきています。このラテン語climaxはギリシャ語klimaxから来ているのですが、ギリシャ語の意味は梯子（はしご）の段のことだそうです。比喩的に、人生における重要なポイント、転換点を意味するようになり、よって、更年期を指すようになったものです。

古代ローマにおいては、7の倍数となる年齢（例えば、49歳、56歳など）はclimacterと呼ばれ、日本で言う厄年と通じる概念であったようです。
