rainy day fund

Many Americans are woefully unprepared to handle an unexpected expense. Less than half (44%) could afford to pay a $1,000 emergency cost from their savings, according to a recent Bankrate survey.

This savings shortfall puts many households in a financially precarious situation.

Many Americans recognize the importance of having an emergency fund, yet many struggle to actually build one. Inflation may be partly to blame.
(Hanna Horvath. Inflation washes away rainy day funds: 44% of Americans can’t cover a $1,000 expense. NewYorkPost. January 30, 2024.)

rainy day funds

not give monkey's about

Protesting farmers encircled Paris with traffic-snarling barricades Monday, using hundreds of lumbering tractors and mounds of hay bales to block highways leading to France's capital to pressure the government over the future of their industry, which has been shaken by repercussions of the Ukraine war.
(France's protesting farmers encircle Paris with tractor barricades, vowing a 'siege' over grievances. ABC News. January 29, 2024.)

Headlines like “EU tries to placate farmers as far right fans flames” (Report, January 26) are misleading, at least in France. Farmers are decent people who do not give a monkey’s about the extreme right. They just want to make a living. The conditions they work under simply do not resonate with a tin-eared narrowly Parisian elite whose knowledge of the countryside is limited to weekends in country houses and boasting to foreigners that France has the best “cuisine” in the world!
(Francis Ghilès. Letter: French farmers ‘don’t give a monkey’s about far right’. Financial Times. January 30, 2024.)

do not give a monkey’s about

monkey's fart
monkey's toss

don't give a fart
don't give a toss

waffle

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is ready to “do it alone” when it comes to the war in Gaza, as President Biden is accused of sending mixed messages on the US stance over the conflict.

Netanyahu, in a recent interview with British TalkTV’s Douglas Murray, said, “A nation has to do what it has to do to survive.

“If they cannot stand the heat of public opinion, then we’ll just have to do it alone. We will do what we need to do,” he said of other world leaders — as the Biden White House takes heat for wobbling between declaring it has Israel’s back and then appearing to back-peddle as anti-Israel protests have heated up at home.
(Alex Oliveira. Bibi vows to ‘do it alone’ if necessary as Biden White House appears to waffle on US stance. New York Post. January 28, 2024.)

Biden White House appears to waffle on US stance

plagiarize

After several days of speculation, the Pokemon Company and Nintendo have signaled they are investigating Palworld, a viral Pokemon clone that has sold over 8 million copies in less than a week.

“Palworld” is an open-world survival game available for Windows PCs and Xbox consoles that has stirred controversy in the past week due to its in-game characters’ close resemblance to the titular creatures in the popular “Pokemon” games on Nintendo’s systems.

Some have accused the game’s publisher Pocketpair of using AI to plagiarize popular “Pokemon” designs—with some users pointing to its creator’s earlier comments in favor of AI use in game design—although no evidence of this has been made public.
(Siladitya Ray. Pokemon Is 'Investigating' Palworld For Potential IP Infringement—Here’s What To Know About The Controversial Game That’s Gone Viral. Forbes. January 25, 2024.)

plagiarize

Life happens.

The average American retires not at 80, or 70, or even 65, but at 62. That statistic comes from two different annual surveys of working and retired Americans, one from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), and the other from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.
(Daniel de Visé. Think you'll work past 70? Good luck. Why most of us retire earlier. USA Today. January 24, 2024.)

The hard truth: We don’t always get to retire when we want. The reality of retirement in America is a “radical departure” from what workers envision, Transamerica reports.

Many people imagine easing out of employment on their own terms. But actual retirement tends to arrive abruptly and unexpectedly, triggered by declining health or corporate downsizing. The new year has brought a cascade of layoff announcements from big companies like Amazon, Citigroup, and Google.

In the Transamerica survey, 56% of retirees said they retired sooner than they had planned. A much smaller share, 7%, retired later than expected. Only 37% retired on their own schedule.
(ibid.)

Why do so many of us retire sooner than we had hoped?

Simply put: Life happens.

In the Transamerica report, nearly half of those who retired earlier than planned blamed their health: physical limitations, illness or disability. Roughly two-fifths blamed their jobs: They were laid off, downsized or lured into early retirement, or they were no longer happy at work.
(ibid.)

Life happens.
