台風上陸 ― landfall

台風18号が日本列島に上陸しました。関東・首都圏では今朝から風雨がきつくなり、交通機関が大変に乱れ、私は会社に出社できませんでした。ニュースにとりあげられている被害写真をみるとすさまじいものがありますが、台風上陸は海外メディアでもトップニュースで取り上げられているようです。

ご存知の通り、海外では台風に名前がつけられていますが、今回の台風18号については、Melorという名前でした。名前をつけるのは欧米の習慣と思っていたのですが、よくよく調べてみると好き勝手に誰かが名づけているのでは無くて、ちゃんとした管理方式にのっとってやっているのだそうです。また、日本は名前ではなくて、番号方式を使っているのだということです。（知りませんでした・・・。）

さて、台風上陸の記事ですが、1例として引用してみます。


Melor affects the sourth of Japan

The 18th typhoon of the Northwest Pacific season is affecting southern parts of Japan with heavy rain and strong winds.

Melor is expected to make landfall south of Kyoto later on Wednesday, as a category one storm with sustained winds around 100mph (155km/h).

"landfall"という単語に馴染みがありませんでしたので手元の辞書を繰って見たのですが、”陸地初認”（研究社新英和大辞典 第五版）という訳語で、どうやら海事用語のようです。"landslide"とも同義ということであり、台風上陸の意味は見当たりません。

恐らく、"make landfall"で台風の上陸となることは明らかですが、辞書に無いのはこれが最近の用法だからでしょうか？ちなみにランダムハウス（こちらは版が不明。多分10年くらい前のもの）にも台風のコンテクストはありませんでした。
