朝飯前 ― a piece of cake

”朝飯前”という表現があります。たわいも無い、いとも簡単に片付けることができる、といった物事に対して使う表現ですが、朝ごはんを食べる前でも、つまり空腹状態でもできるような簡単なこと、ということから、”朝飯前”という表現になったということです。実は知らなかったのですが、今日の産経抄に出ていましたので取り上げることにしました。

英語では、"a piece of cake"が同様の表現といってよいと思います。これ以外に、


as easy as pie
as simple as ABC


などの表現もあるようですが、成句としての"a piece of cake"の方が表現として”朝飯前”に似通ったものがあると思います。

"a piece of cake"が”いとも簡単な事”という意味になる背景には、ケーキ一切れなんかひと口で食べることができる、という連想にあるようです。実際に食べることができるかどうかは、ケーキ一切れの大きさや、食べる人の口の大きさによるとは思いますが・・・。

I got a lecture that the plaque will go away in a couple of years as long as I don't resume smoking. Refraining from smoking has been a piece of cake here in Nepal. But I know when I get home and have a big steak and a glass of red wine, a cigarette is going to sound pretty good.
