"league table"って何？

オーストラリア国会で、"parental leave"（育児休職）を認める法案が可決されたとの事。なるほど。取得率はさておくとして、日本ではずいぶん前から実施済みという印象です。

記事は下記のように続きます。


"Australia has been one of only two countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development not to provide for parental leave and it is a league table from which we have now thankfully removed ourselves," Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Heather Ridout said.

OECD加盟国で育児休職が制度化されていないのは、オーストラリアを含む2カ国だけで（もう1カ国はどこ？ご存知の方教えてください）、このことが政府にとっては”頭の痛い事実”だったようです。

ところで、今回の法制化により、"now thankfully removed ourselves"できたという、"a league table"とは何の事？という疑問が、記事を読んでいて最初に思いました。

結論から言いますと、"league"とは日本語で”同盟”とか”（スポーツの）リーグ”のことを指しますが、その"table"とは、つまり”ランキング表”ということです。”比較一覧表”と言ってもいいです。

”育児休職制度”という観点で見た場合の各国ランキングを並べた場合に、オーストラリアは下位にランキングされていたのだと思います。今回の法制化で下位ランキングから脱することができた（now thankfully removed ourselves）ということが、政府関係者にとっては記念すべきことだということでしょうか。
