警察官の方もこんな相談が来るとは夢にも思わなかったでしょうが、期待に応え、宿題を手伝ったようです。（日本のおまわりさんでもありうるでしょうか！？）

取り上げたい表現は、


step up to the mark


という表現です。

よく知られている表現に、"up to the mark"というものがありますが、こちらは合格点（基準）に達している、というような意味で用いられます。

ランダムハウス英和辞書のエントリでは、通例否定文のコンテクストで用いられると説明があります。

上記の引用は否定文ではないのですが、"step up to the mark"は"up to the mark"とは別の表現と考えられます。（算数の問題を解いてあげた、ということで「合格点」と掛けたしゃれの雰囲気はありますが。）

ちなみに、手持ちの辞書では"step up to the mark"の説明は見当たりませんでした。

"step up to the mark"は期待に応えるといった意味合いだろうと想像ができます。

ネット検索で"step up to the mark"を検索すると、類似の表現に、


step up to the plate


というものがあることが分かりました。

ここで"the plate"というのは例えば野球におけるホームプレートのことを指しているようです。"step up to the plate"とは、バッターが打撃準備に入ることを指しており、つまりは役割を果たすために位置につく、という意味であり、役目を果たそうとする動きを意味しています。

"step up to the mark"と"step up to the plate"が同じ意味合いかという疑問は少し残るのですが、"the mark"にもスタートラインの意味があることから、恐らく意味としては近いものがあると考察した次第です。
