記事のタイトルを始め、本文中にも繰り返し用いられている表現が、


turn on


という一見何でもないような動詞句なのですが、どうやら意味深だと思って調べるとやはり普通の（！？）意味ではありませんでした。

"turn a lady on"にしろ、"turn a woman on"にしろ同じことですが、Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismによると、


to excite


というシンプルな定義です。

しかしながら、この"to excite"には性的な意味合いがあって、説明は以下のように続きます。


Through any taboo agent or illegal agent. Of sex.


これはつまり媚薬の類のことを言っているのですが、"turn on"にそんな意味合いがあるとは知りませんでした。ちなみに、研究社の大英和辞典にも「性的に興奮させる」という口語表現が載っています。

動詞句としての"turn on"以外にも、"turn-on"という名詞の表現もあります。


An older beard or stubble, specifically 10-day-old stubble, is more of a turn-on to women.
