新しく大統領に就任する（ことになるだろうと思われる）ジョー・バイデン氏ですが、その家族については、大統領選中は息子のHunter氏のスキャンダルが取り沙汰されました。

新しくファーストレディーとなるJill夫人は学校の先生をしていて、ファーストレディーになっても先生を辞めるつもりもないそうです。

そして新たに注目されているのが娘さんのAhsleyさん。

トランプ政権では、ファーストレディーのMelania夫人、First DaughterということではIvankaさんが何かと話題になりましたが、Ivankaさんの後釜になるのがAshleyさんということで注目が高まっているようです。

英紙デーリーメールの記事はややゴシップ調ではありますが、Ashleyさんについて過去に薬物使用で逮捕歴があると報じています。

そんなAshleyさんも,

ということで、バイデン氏にとっては「目に入れても痛くない」ほどの存在ということです。

バイデン氏は最初の夫人と娘を交通事故で、さらに長男を病気で亡くしており、再婚したJill夫人との間に生まれたAshleyさんには特別な思いがあるのだと思われます。

さて、このフレーズ、よく知られているところかと思いますが、聖書に因むとは知りませんでした。

ランダムハウスや研究社の英和辞典に拠れば、申命記に出てくる、下記の記述に因むそうです。

In a desert land he found him,

    in a barren and howling waste.

He shielded him and cared for him;

    he guarded him as the apple of his eye,

(Deutronomy 32:10)

新共同訳では、「御自分のひとみのように守られた」と訳されています。

また、ゼカリヤ書においても、

For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you — for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye —

(Zechariah 2:8)

とあるそうです。

新共同訳は（2:12に相当するのですが）、

あなたたちに触れる者は、わたしの目の瞳に触れる者だ

となっています。

つまり、“apple of one’s eye”はひとみ（瞳）ということになります。

視覚上重要な役割を果たす瞳が、聖書で用いられているようなコンテクストから、愛おしい対象を意味する表現に発展していったということは然程不思議ではないかも知れません。
