今年の1語 ― lockdown

Collins Dictionaryが選ぶ、2020年、今年の1語に"lockdown"が選出されたそうです。  

説明の必要までも無く、新型コロナウィルスの脅威一色に全世界が染まったことを反映するものです。

The coronavirus pandemic has officially defined 2020.

UK-based Collins Dictionary has announced “lockdown” as its word of the year, with other pandemic related words close behind.

Defined as “the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces,” the noun was one of six words in the dictionary’s top-ten of 2020 that related to the deadly bug.

日本ではカタカナ語の「ロックダウン」や「クラスター」、「オーバーシュート」などの外来語を分かりにくい、「ロックダウン」については都市封鎖という日本語を使えばいいではないか、などと言われてきましたが、日本でもこのカタカナ語がほぼ定着したかのようです。

"lockdown"という単語の初出はMerriam-Websterによると1973年で、囚人を独房に閉じ込めておくことを意味していました。

Merriam-Websterオンラインでは、"lockdown"という単語の検索数が今年3月に前年比9,900%増加したそうです。
