meteoric

11月になってこのところ関東地方では快晴の日が続いています。

これからの季節は冬晴れ、夜には天体観測に絶好の季節なんですが、稀に夜空に火球を認めたという報告を聞くことがあり、私自身、目撃したことがあります。

火球の正体は隕石であることが多いようです。

隕石には遥かかなたの宇宙という、未知の世界からやってきたということで、特別興味をかきたてられるものがありますが、その希少価値から大変高価な価格がつけられるということを聞いたことがあります。

インドネシア・スマトラ島に住む男性の自宅屋根を突き破って落下した隕石に、およそ200万ドル（約2億円）の価格が付いたとか。

隕石は英語で、

meteor(ite)

と言いますが、その形容詞表現が、“meteoric”です。

流れ星と隕石に定義の違いがあるのか知りませんが、流星群のことは“meteor shower”と言いますので、同じかなと思います。

形容詞の“meteoric”には、

彗星の如くぱっと現れて消える

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味合いがあるようです。（彗星と流れ星とは違うもののようです。）

人が急にお金持ちになったり、有名になったり、といったコンテクストで使われる形容表現です。（消えるかどうかは別として、変化が急であることを強調する表現だと言えます。）

因みに、“meteorite”も、“meteor”とほとんど同義で、隕石、流れ星の意味で使われます。

その形容詞形に“meteoritic”がありますが、こちらは“meteoric”とは異なり、上記のような意味合いで用いられることは無いようです。
