moonshine

New Delhi, India (CNN) Indian police have launched a crackdown on illegal bootleggers after 80 people were killed drinking toxic moonshine in the country's north, police said.

India has long grappled with the problem of fake or illegal alcohol, which is affordable and readily available for many impoverished people.

Police believe the deaths occurred when victims across two neighboring states drank from the same batch of illegal homemade brew, which was produced by a criminal group operating between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

moonshine

hooch

People are great at arguing. But a project from IBM shows that computers are getting quite good at it, too.

On Monday, Harish Natarajan, a grand finalist in 2016's World Debating Championships, faced off against IBM's Project Debater — a computer touted by the company as the first artificial-intelligence system built to meaningfully debate humans. Natarajan won, but the computer demonstrated the increasingly complex arguments that AI is starting to make.

Project Debater, which has been in the works since 2012, is designed to come up with coherent, convincing speeches of its own, while taking in the arguments of a human opponent and creating its own rebuttal. It even formulates its own closing argument. To generate its arguments and rebuttals, Project Debater uses newspaper and magazine articles from its own database, and also takes in the nuances of the human opponent's arguments. It is not connected to the internet and cannot crib arguments from sites like Wikipedia.
(Rachel Metz. IBM's fast-talking AI machine just lost to a human champion in a live debate. CNN. February 12, 2019.)

vamp

First it was Prada. Then Gucci. Now, Katy Perry is being called out for creating fashion that evokes blackface.

The singer's namesake brand faces criticism over two styles of shoes that some say feature racist imagery.

CNN has reached out to Perry for comment. Perry debuted her line of whimsical shoes in 2017. They are available on her website and through retailers around the world including Dillard's and Walmart in the United States.

The Ora Face Block Heel and Rue Face Slip-On Loafers come in black and beige. The vamps in both styles include the same protruding eyes, nose and full red lips.

frightful five

Kashmir Hill wanted Amazon out of her life, completely.

It was the first week of a six-week experiment in living without tech giants. She had a virtual private network, or VPN, that would keep her devices walled off from any Amazon product. She would avoid Whole Foods and power down her Kindles.
(Lulu Garcia-Navarro. Why We Can't Break Up With Big Tech. NPR. February 10, 2019.)

This is a story of how, over six weeks, I cut them out of my own life and tried to prevent them from knowing about me or monetizing me in any way ー not just by putting my iPhone in a drawer for a week or only buying local, but by really, truly blocking these companies from accessing me and vice versa. I wanted to find out how hard it would be—or if I could even do it—given that these tech giants dominate the internet in so many invisible ways that it’s hard to even know them all.
(Kashmir Hill. Life Without Tech Giants. Gizmodo. January 22, 2019.)

People have done thought experiments before about which of the “frightful five” it would be hardest to live without, but I thought it would be more illuminating, if painful, to do an actual experiment: I would try to block a tech giant each week, to tell the tale of life without it. At the end of those five weeks, I’d try to block all of them at once. God help me.
(ibid.)

This is the most glaring and underappreciated fact of internet-age capitalism: We are, all of us, in inescapable thrall to one of the handful of American technology companies that now dominate much of the global economy. I speak, of course, of my old friends the Frightful Five: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
(Farhad Manjoo. Tech’s Frightful Five: They’ve Got Us. New York Times. May 10, 2017.)

kick the tires

Scientists kick the tyres on Trump’s plan to tackle HIV

In his State of the Union address on 5 February, President Donald Trump committed to eliminating the HIV epidemic in the United States by 2030. Many researchers applaud the sentiment but are sceptical that the administration can effectively reach out to communities that it has helped to marginalize through its actions.
(Amy Maxmen. Scientists kick the tyres on Trump’s plan to tackle HIV. Nature. February 6, 2019.)

kick the tyres

From Washington, Obama came under criticism from a presidential rival, 26-year veteran Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, for his lack of experience. "I think experience matters to people. The stakes are very, very high right now," Dodd said on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "This is not a time for on-the-job training." At the house party in Iowa Falls, Obama said, "I'm going to have to be run through the paces, people are going to have to lift up the hood, kick the tires and be clear that I have a grasp of the issues that are of utmost importance in people's lives."
(Associated Press, 2007)

I'm going to have to be run through the paces, people are going to have to lift up the hood, kick the tires...
