A Florida sheriff's office is naming a new K-9 after a sergeant who was killed while on duty last year.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office named the K-9 Roy, which is Sergeant Brian Lavigne's middle name. His Daughter, Caitlin LaVigne, is a deputy at the sheriff's office and said that the dog will keep her dad's spirit alive.

"My dad was tough as nails, just like the dogs are, so it's nice to know that he's still kind of out here with us," LaVigne said.

記事中、K9（K-9）という言葉が出てきます。補足もなく、ごく普通に使われているのですが、知らないと何のことか分かりませんね。

本文を読み進めると、K9はイヌ（dog）を指していると分かります。

アメリカでは警察犬をK9と呼ぶのだと知りました。

なぜ、K9なのでしょう。

ケーナインと発音しますが、これはイヌを意味するcanineと同じ発音になるので、K9だそうです。

ちなみに、canineはラテン語でイヌを意味するcanisから来ています。

以前取り上げましたが、警察犬を表すのに"cadaver dog"という表現も使われます。

hunky-dory

"hunky-dory"という単語をご存知でしょうか？

見慣れない単語ではないかと思います。私は初めて見ました。

NASAの天体望遠鏡のミッションについて、予期せぬトラブルに見舞われたものの、最終的には、

"Everything is hunky-dory and doing well now,"

というコメントで、コンテクストからおおよその意味は察しがつきますが、"hunky-dory"とは、

quite satisfactory; fine

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味だそうです。

それにしても変わったスペルで、見た目では意味の想像がつかないですね。ひょっとして、reduplicationの類かなと思ったのですが、そうではないようです。

まずはhunky-から。

米俗語で、hunky、もしくはhunkという単語もあり、ちゃんとした、とか、安全な、という意味だそうです。オランダ語のhoncから来ているとの説明があります。

一方、-doryの方についてはよく分かっていないらしく、研究社新英和大辞典では語源不詳となっています。

ところが、Merriam-Websterによると、この-doryについて、日本語から来ている可能性があるという説明を載せています。-doryは、日本語でナントカ通りと言う時の、「通り」（street）を指したものだというのです。

それで、hunky-（安全な）、-dory（通り）ということになるのですが、解説ではアメリカから日本にやって来た水兵さんが賑やかな通りを安全地帯と感じたのであろうと推測されるということです。なお、ランダムハウス英和では、"hunky-dory"というのは日本語の「本町通り」（honcho-dori）から来ていて、開港時の横浜にやってきた外国人がそこを勝手が分かる安心な場所と感じていた、という解釈を載せています。

余談ですが、hunky-については子供の遊びの鬼ごっこ（tag）で「安全地帯」（鬼に捕まることのない領域）を指すのにも用いられるようです。

win by a nose

"Winning by a nose in the fight against COVID-19"という記事のタイトルに釣られました。

南アフリカで発生し、昨年末から世界各国で急拡大するオミクロン株により、新型コロナウィルスによるパンデミックは3年目に突入しようとしています。

COVID–19との戦いに勝利はあるのでしょうか？

We are still in the early days of the age of omicron, and there is much that we do not know about this variant of COVID-19. But we do know that it is more transmissible than other variants and that it arose in a part of the world where only a small percentage of the population was vaccinated.

In a later scene, CDC Director Ellis Cheever, played by Laurence Fishburne, gives a child the intranasal vaccine that ultimately ends the pandemic.

We recommended the filmmakers use an intranasal vaccine because it would be easy to manufacture worldwide, distribute and deliver.

"by a nose"とは主に競馬のレースで、首の差とか、鼻の差などという時の、僅差での勝敗を表現するものです。

勝利の方程式は鼻がキーなのでしょうか、それとも勝てたとして、その差は僅差、つまり「鼻の差」！？ということなのでしょうか。

記事を読んでようやく分かりましたが、CDCの専門家によるこのオピニオン記事は注射薬のワクチンに加えて、点鼻のワクチン(intranasal vaccine）を提案しているものです。

注射に比べて、製造や物流管理などの面で優り、またワクチン接種者にも侵襲が少ないというベネフィットがあると主張しています。

ということで、「鼻」がキーワードということで、タイトルに持ってきた「鼻の差」（by a nose）とはしゃれが利いています。

over the moon

英王室から離脱して米国に住むハリー元王子とメーガン元妃の夫妻は、西海岸の豪奢な邸宅にお住まいでしたが、お気に召さなかったのか、目下、新しい住まいを探しているそうです。

英大衆紙のSunの記事から引用します。

MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry already want to sell their US home as they are not "over the moon" over the £11m lavish mansion, it is claimed.

The couple have been living in the sprawling, nine-bedroom Montecito home for around 18 months.

But a source claims Meghan and Harry are now showing interest in other houses and are open to private offers.

英王室とかセレブの生活とかに興味関心はありません。"over the moon"というフレーズの意味を取り上げようと引用した次第です。

"over the moon"を辞書で引くと、とても幸せである（very  happy）、という意味でした。「月にも昇る心地」、とは言いませんが、「天にも昇る心地」、と言ったところでしょうか。

ということはつまり、夫妻は今の住まいには満足していないので引っ越し先を探している、ということになります。

さて、そんなことはどうでも良く、"over the moon"というフレーズの由来に関心は移ります。

このフレーズの由来は"Hey Diddle Diddle"というイギリスでは馴染みのある童謡の歌詞（一部を下記に引用）にあるそうです。

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle,

The cow jumped over the moon.

The little dog laughed to see such fun

And the dish ran away with the spoon!

歌詞に、"The cow jumped over the moon."という箇所がありますね。

童謡の歌詞を分析するのは野暮というものです。

ネコにバイオリン（ネコはバイオリンを弾いた？）、それを聴いたウシさんは月まで跳び上がるほど（喜んだ！？）、仔犬も笑い、お皿はスプーンと一緒に逃げ出した、というような内容です。

aquamation

南アフリカのアパルトヘイト政策（apartheid）廃止に貢献した指導者としてノーベル平和賞を授章したツツ大司教の葬儀が執り行われました。故人の意志に基づいて、火葬（cremation）ではなく"aquamation"と呼ばれる方法が採られたと報道されています。

この"aquamation"という単語について、aqua-とスペルに見えることから、水に関係するであろうことは想像がつくのですが、具体的にどのような方法によるものかは知らず、また辞書にもこの単語は載っていないようです。

下記引用に説明がありますが、ネットを検索すると、「アルカリ加水分解葬」という訳語があてられていました。

The company's website says the process "uses 90% less energy than flame cremation and does not emit any harmful greenhouse gases."

"aquamation"は別名"water cremation"、"biocremation"などとも称されるそうですが、火葬に比べて温室効果ガス発生がないという特徴があります。

ウィキペディアを参照したのですが、"aquamation"は動物の死骸を処理する方法として1888年の昔に開発、特許化されており、そんなに古くからあるとは知らず驚きました。ペットの埋葬方法として広く採用されているようですが、米国では人間の埋葬方法としての"aquamation"の扱いは州により異なり、合法的な埋葬方法として認めていない州もあるそうです。
