南アフリカのアパルトヘイト政策（apartheid）廃止に貢献した指導者としてノーベル平和賞を授章したツツ大司教の葬儀が執り行われました。故人の意志に基づいて、火葬（cremation）ではなく"aquamation"と呼ばれる方法が採られたと報道されています。

この"aquamation"という単語について、aqua-とスペルに見えることから、水に関係するであろうことは想像がつくのですが、具体的にどのような方法によるものかは知らず、また辞書にもこの単語は載っていないようです。

下記引用に説明がありますが、ネットを検索すると、「アルカリ加水分解葬」という訳語があてられていました。

Aquamation is a water-based process whose scientific name is "alkaline hydrolysis", in which a "combination of gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity are used to accelerate the breakdown of organic materials" when a body is laid to rest in soil, according to Bio-Response Solutions, a US company which specializes in the process.

The company's website says the process "uses 90% less energy than flame cremation and does not emit any harmful greenhouse gases."

"aquamation"は別名"water cremation"、"biocremation"などとも称されるそうですが、火葬に比べて温室効果ガス発生がないという特徴があります。

ウィキペディアを参照したのですが、"aquamation"は動物の死骸を処理する方法として1888年の昔に開発、特許化されており、そんなに古くからあるとは知らず驚きました。ペットの埋葬方法として広く採用されているようですが、米国では人間の埋葬方法としての"aquamation"の扱いは州により異なり、合法的な埋葬方法として認めていない州もあるそうです。
