記事の要旨は、地球温暖化問題を憂慮し、環境保護を訴える活動家らがブックフェスティバルをボイコットした、というものです。

その背景には、フェスティバルのスポンサー企業が化石燃料の会社に投資しているということがありました。化石燃料は温暖化の元凶、その化石燃料で利潤を得ている企業に投資するようなスポンサーはけしからん、ということです。

以下のようなくだりがあります。

ここで、"bankrolling"という表現が使われていますが、"bankroll"とは札束、お金のことです。"bank"は銀行で、"roll"には札束の意味がありますが、"bankroll"は資金的な援助をするという動詞の意味で使われるようになり、American Heritage Dictionaryによればインフォーマルな表現として定着しました。どことなく、ネガティヴな含みがあるようにも思える言い回しです。単に経済的、資金面での支援、援助というよりは、日本語で言う「加担」のニュアンスが漂います。

ところで、このブックフェスティバルにはあの有名な環境活動家のグレタ・トゥーンベリさんも参加予定だったそうですが、同じ理由でボイコットしていたという前置きがあります。

It followed the announcement earlier this month by climate activist Greta Thunberg that she was cancelling her scheduled appearance at the festival, accusing Baillie Gifford of “greenwashing”.

糾弾されているスポンサーの投資会社は化石燃料企業への投資額は全体の2パーセントにも満たないもので、それよりはるかに大きな額をクリーンなエネルギー開発企業に投資している、と主張しています。

agamograph

X（書くのも読むのもまだ慣れませんが、旧Twitter）が本社オフィスの備品などをオークションに出しているというニュースを読みました。

会社がオフィス移転に際して家具や什器、備品を売り払うというのはよくある話ですが、Xが本社移転を計画しているというのでは無さそうです。

オークションのきっかけは同社のロゴが変わったことによるもので、あの「青い鳥」のアイコンを始め、古き良き（！？）ツイッターの時代の物品が一掃されているようです。

日本からオークション参加して買い取るのは厳しそうですが、なかなか興味深い出品が窺えます。（記事はこちら。）

その中で、"agamograph"という見慣れない単語を見かけました。

説明と記事の写真を見て、なるほど、あれのことを"agamograph"というのか、と知った次第です。街中などでも看板広告が通過するうちに見え方が変わるものがありますが、「あれ」のことです。

一応補足しますと、見る角度、方向によって見え方が異なる平面のイメージのことで、レンチキュラー（lenticular）とも言うようです。"lenticular"というのは凸レンズのことで、これが見る角度によりイメージが異なって見えるからくりになっています。

"agamograph"という単語ですが、これはヤーコブ・アガム Yaakov Agam （1928〜）というイスラエルの彫刻家の名前から来ているのだそうです。

手元の英和辞書、オンライン辞書でも載せていないようです。

deviancy

イラクは国内のメディアなどに対し、"homosexual"という言葉の使用を禁止したと報じられています。

では、何と表現するのか、というと、

sexual deviancy

と言い換える、ということです。

Iraq's Media and Communications Commission has issued a directive instructing all media and social media platforms in the country to refrain from using the terms "homosexual" or "homosexuality" and instead use "sexual deviancy."

The decision, reported widely by Iraq's state and private news outlets, was made to safeguard societal values and public order, the commission said, noting that the terms "homosexuality, homosexual, and Gender" hold undesirable connotations within Iraqi society.

同国のメディア規制当局はこの他、ジェンダー（gender）という言葉の使用も禁じましたが、こちらは何と言い換えるのか、いくつか記事を拾い読みしましたが不明です。

さて、"deviancy"という見慣れない単語ですが、スペルに着目すると、"deviate"との類似性に気がつくと思います。

"deviancy"とは、"deviate"している状態を指す名詞で、"deviate"とは道から外れる、逸脱する、という意味です。分離、離脱を意味する接頭辞de-と、道を意味するラテン語viaから成る単語です。

"deviancy"は"deviance"とも書くことがありますが、常軌を逸している、一般に受け入れられている規範から外れている状態、という意味です。

研究社新英和大辞典で"deviance"は、「（性欲）異常（の行動）」とあり、またランダムハウス英和で"sexual deviant"には「（性的）倒錯者」との訳語が見えます。

イスラム教国家ではLGBTQに対する反発が強く、同性愛は罪とされますが、イラクも同性愛に対する死刑制度こそ無いものの、今回のような統制は性的マイノリティに対する同国の姿勢を示したものと言えそうです。

acrophobia / aichmophobia

イギリス人によく見られる恐怖症（phobia）のトップは？という見出しに釣られました。

人それぞれ、忌み嫌うものがあって、女性だと蜘蛛（クモ）が嫌いだとか、人によっては閉所恐怖症といったものがあります。

英国人の"phobia"のトップは高所恐怖症でした。

"phobia of heights"（もしくは、fear of heights）と言いますが、専門用語は、

acrophobia

と言います。

Lots of us have a fear of something, whether it be spiders, the dark or needles.

And a survey by YouGov  has revealed that, of the 10 phobias asked about, almost a quarter of Brits (23 per cent) say they have a phobia of heights.

"phobia"というのは、ある対象や事象に過剰とも言える恐怖感や嫌悪感を催すことで、当人以外の人間にはさして気にもならないのに、当人には激しい動揺を引き起こし、時に嘔吐などの身体症状をもたらすものです。

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a phobia is “an extreme fear or dislike of a particular thing or situation, especially one that is not reasonable”.

高所恐怖症という意味の"acrophobia"という単語は、先端、始点、頂点を意味する接頭辞acro-と"phobia"が結合したものです。

高所の綱渡りをものともしない曲芸をアクロバット（acrobat）、一連の単語の頭文字だけを取って略したものを"acronym"、身体の末端が肥大化する疾患をアクロメガリー（acromegaly）と言いますが、これらの単語に見られる接頭辞acro-はギリシャ語akrosから来ているものです。

ところで、同じく恐怖症に先端恐怖症というのがあります。こちらは針など鋭い先端（尖端）に言いしれぬ恐怖感を覚えることですが、先述のacro-に先端の意味があるところ、先端恐怖症は何というのか、ふと疑問に思いました。

調べてみますと、

aichmophobia

というそうです。

実のところ、手元の研究社新英和大辞典には載っていないのですが、Merriam-Websterによると槍の先端を意味するギリシャ語aichmeから来ているそうです。

ということで、今日は1日1語ならず、1日2語となりました。

side channel attack

コンピュータのキーボードを叩く音を解析することで、入力内容を解析できる・・・！？

そんな驚愕の報告があるという記事を読みました。

記事によれば、タイピングの音を拾い、AI（人工知能）に学習させることにより、かなりの精度で入力内容を解析できるそうです。

想像したことすらありませんでしたが、キーボードのストロークにはキーによって音が異なるらしく、その違いを解析するのだそうです。こうした解析は例えばZoomやSkypeのようなコミュニケーションツールによりオンライン上で得られる音声でも可能であり、つまりはキーを叩く音を聞かれてしまえばパスワードも機密情報もダダ漏れということなのです。

Researchers in the UK claim to have translated the sound of laptop keystrokes into their corresponding letters with 95 percent accuracy in some cases.

That 95 percent figure was achieved with nothing but a nearby iPhone. Remote methods are just as dangerous: over Zoom, the accuracy of recorded keystrokes only dropped to 93 percent, while Skype calls were still 91.7 percent accurate.

パスワードの漏洩に関しては、コンピュータウィルスの感染とか、ハッカーによる不正アクセス、近年ではソーシャルエンジニアリングと呼ばれる手口による不正な取得などがよく知られています。

一方、今回の報告にあるような、ターゲットとなるデバイス等への直接のアクセスに依らない情報窃取のことを、

side channel attack

と呼ぶそうです。日本語では「サイドチャネル攻撃」と訳されます。

"side channel"のチャネル（channel）とは経路のこと、即ちターゲットへの直接的なアクセスによらず、副次的な（side）経路による攻撃、ということです。

In other words, this is a side channel attack with considerable accuracy, minimal technical requirements, and a ubiquitous data exfiltration point: Microphones, which are everywhere from our laptops, to our wrists, to the very rooms we work in. 

To make matters worse, the trio said in their paper that they've achieved what they claim is an accuracy record for acoustic side-channel attacks (ASCA) without relying on a language model. Instead, they used deep learning and self-attention transformer layers to capture the sounds of typing and translate it into data for exfiltration.

人を騙す手口、人のものを盗む悪知恵というのは次々と新手が編み出されるもの。

"side channel attack"についてはネットで検索すると小難しい用語や技術解説を交えたものが目に付きますが、最近のAIと組み合わせた、キーボードの音を拾う"acoustic side channel attack"はスマホなどを使えば可能とも言われており、えらい世の中になったものだと思います。
