A leading climate crisis author has staged a walkout at the Edinburgh international book festival in protest at its sponsor’s links to fossil fuel companies.

記事の要旨は、地球温暖化問題を憂慮し、環境保護を訴える活動家らがブックフェスティバルをボイコットした、というものです。

その背景には、フェスティバルのスポンサー企業が化石燃料の会社に投資しているということがありました。化石燃料は温暖化の元凶、その化石燃料で利潤を得ている企業に投資するようなスポンサーはけしからん、ということです。

ここで、"bankrolling"という表現が使われていますが、"bankroll"とは札束、お金のことです。"bank"は銀行で、"roll"には札束の意味がありますが、"bankroll"は資金的な援助をするという動詞の意味で使われるようになり、American Heritage Dictionaryによればインフォーマルな表現として定着しました。どことなく、ネガティヴな含みがあるようにも思える言い回しです。単に経済的、資金面での支援、援助というよりは、日本語で言う「加担」のニュアンスが漂います。

ところで、このブックフェスティバルにはあの有名な環境活動家のグレタ・トゥーンベリさんも参加予定だったそうですが、同じ理由でボイコットしていたという前置きがあります。
