飛行機のトイレを利用したことがある人は直ぐに思い浮かぶと思いますが、地上のトイレと違い、水洗ではなく、結構大きな音を立てて吸引する仕組みになっています。

その仕組みについて取り上げた興味深い記事を読みました。

あの強力な吸引力は空高く飛行する航空機内部と外部の気圧差を利用したものだそうですが、上空で水洗というのは不都合があり使えないために考案された特許技術なのだそうです。

故に、離陸前や着陸時には機内のトイレは利用できないということになるのですが、そんなこと考えてみたこともなかったです。

ところで、トイレ利用後、結局のところ、アレはどうなるのか？という、これまた多くの人が関心を持っていると思われる話題では、以下のようなくだりがあります。

小生も漠然と高度何万フィートという上空だから、撒き散らしているのではなどと思っていましたが、そうではないそうです。

ちゃんと航空機前後部にタンクがあり、そこに溜め置かれるのです。

そして着陸後は、

honey wagon

に・・・、ということなのですが、この表現を知りませんでした。

"honey wagons"とはバキュームカー、すなわち屎尿運搬車を意味する単語なんですね。

なぜ、"honey"（ハチミツ）なんでしょう？

アレの色がハチミツの色に似ているからだそうです（笑）

この他、記事では、機内トイレがトラブったらどうなるか、高度何万フィートで撒き散らされるアレは氷点下の外気温でたちまち凝固し、業界では"blue ice"と呼ばれる、など興味深い内容です。

航空機製造大手のボーイング社の杜撰な品質管理を内部告発した男性が不審死を遂げるという事件が大きく報じられています。

A former longtime Boeing employee who had raised serious concerns about the company’s production standards was found dead in Charleston, South Carolina, over the weekend, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

A news release from the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said John Barnett, 62, died on March 9, from “what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” The city’s police department says detectives are investigating the case and “awaiting the formal cause of death, along with any additional findings that might shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Barnett.”

ボーイング社の品質管理部門で30年以上に渡る勤務した男性は近く証言台に立つ予定だったそうですが、駐車場の車の中で死亡しているのが発見されたということです。拳銃による自殺と見られるということですが、その理由が見当たらず、当然怪しいということになります。

男性の死亡が確認されるに至った経緯について、以下のくだりがあります。

A police incident report says officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a Holiday Inn in Charleston shortly before 10:20 am on Saturday. When they arrived, responding officers found Barnett in the driver’s seat of a truck in the parking lot, with a gunshot wound to the head. He was holding a handgun. Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

ここで引っ掛かったのが、

welfare check

という言葉です。

"welfare"という単語を福祉、厚生といった日本語で暗記しています。この日本語が邪魔をするのか、どうもコンテクストに照らしてしっくりと来ません。また、この"welfare check"なる表現は英和辞書に載っていないようです。

ここでは、"welfare check"を警察が行なった（conduct）、とあります。"dispatched"ともありますから、警察は要請を受けて"welfare check"のために男性の元に駆けつけ、その死亡を確認するに至った、と解釈することができます。

そうすると、"welfare check"に意味するところはいわゆる安否確認、生存確認のことであろうと思われます。

ネットを検索してみると、"welfare check"は"wellness check"とも言うらしく、

A welfare check, also known as a wellness check, is when police stop by a person’s home to make sure they are okay. Requests for welfare checks are made by friends, family, and neighbors, typically after someone unexpectedly stops answer their phone or getting in touch with others.

との解説があり、やはり動静が不安視される人の安否確認を意味するようです。

報道によれば、"Rob"という人物から、男性の"welfare check"を要請する電話が警察にあった、ということで、男性の安否を気にかけていた人がいたことが分かっています。

kill notice

英王室が報道機関にリリースした写真に改竄の疑いがあるとして、APやロイターを始めとする報道各社は写真の配信を取り消しすると発表しました。

写真はイギリスのMother‘s Dayに合わせて、キャサリン妃を囲む3人のお子様を写した微笑ましいものですが、英王室から公式にリリースされた写真に改竄の疑惑が持たれ、そして報道機関によって取り消されるというのは極めて異例ではないでしょうか。

キャサリン妃は昨年末より動静が不明であったところ、今年1月に腹部の外科手術を公表という経緯があり、SNSを始めとしてネット上であらぬ噂などを呼んでいました。

The Associated Press and other news agencies issued mandatory kill notices Sunday on the first photo released in months of Kate, the Princess of Wales, citing concerns that the photo was manipulated.

The photo, released by Kensington Palace earlier Sunday, featured the princess surrounded by her three children, while Kate sat in a chair. The photo was credited to Prince William of Wales and was reported to have been taken in Windsor earlier in the week.

写真の「配信取り下げ」について引用記事を含め、各メディアでは、

retract

withdraw

といった表現を使っているのですが、APやロイターによる配信取り消しの公式発表は、

photo kill

picture kill

mandatory kill

となっており、これらは"kill notice(s)"と呼ばれています。

"kill"（殺す）とは随分と物騒な言い方ですが、動詞の"kill"には、

（記事、文章などを）没にする、削る

という意味があるんですね。これは知りませんでした。

問題となった写真をメディアがリリースした直後から、ネット上では不自然な箇所が複数指摘され、合成したのでは無いかという疑惑を生み、却ってキャサリン妃と王室に対する憶測を掻き立てるような結果になったようです。

キャサリン妃は自身がPhotoshopを使って写真を編集したことを認めましたが、どのような編集を行ったのか、またそれが何のためだったのかは分かっていません。

言われてみれば確かに不自然と思われる箇所はあるのですが・・・。

写真に詳しくない小生にはよく分からないというのが正直な感想ですが、報道各社が今回出した"kill notices"という表現は学びでした。

white flag

ロシアの侵攻を受け抗戦しているウクライナに対して、降伏すべきという趣旨の発言をしたローマ法皇に国際社会が一斉に反応しました。

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis said in an interview that Ukraine, facing a possible defeat, should have the courage to negotiate an end to the war with Russia and not be ashamed to sit at the same table to carry out peace talks.

The pope made his appeal during an interview recorded last month with Swiss broadcaster RSI, which was partially released on Saturday.

“I think that the strongest one is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people and has the courage of the white flag, and negotiates,” Francis said, adding that talks should take place with the help of international powers.

ローマ法皇の発言は、

(the strongest one is the one who) has the courage of the white flag, and negotiates

というもので、"white flag"、即ち「白旗」を揚げる勇気をウクライナは持つべきだ、ということのようです。

日本語においても白旗、"white flag"、は停戦や降伏の意思を現す表現として定着しています。

ローマ法皇の真意はウクライナに対して停戦交渉のテーブルへ着くよう呼び掛けたものとも思われますが、侵攻をやめるべきはロシアであるとの批判が西側諸国から出ています。

"white flag"はハーグ条約においても停戦の意思表示として定義されていますがその起源は古く、ウィキペディアによれば漢の時代（25〜220年）に遡るそうです。

インフレにより色んなモノやサービスの値段が上がっていることは周知の事実ですが、特にアメリカ国内におけるカフェやレストランの食事代は異常といわれるのもむべなるかな。

今回槍玉に上がっているのはハンバーガーチェーンなんですが、チーズバーガーとポテト、ドリンクのセット価格が何と24米ドル！

バリューセット（死語！？）でお願いします〜（笑）

The restaurant's prices "are out of control,” wrote X user Wall Street Silver, along with a receipt totaling $24.10 for a bacon cheeseburger, a soda and a small order of fries (the company calls them "little fries").

そんな価格がまかり通るのか、と怒りのSNS投稿が拡散したようです。

ここで出てくるのが、

highway robbery

という表現なんですが、文字通りの意味はハイウェイでの強盗、追い剥ぎ、ということになりますが、まるで強盗のように法外な値段をふっかけること、即ち、

ぼったくり

という意味で用いられる表現です。
