Can a room temperature be sexist?
The question may sound bizarre, but it's taken off on social media ahead of a debate between New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking a third term, and Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon - his challenger for the Democratic nomination.
Ms Nixon has one chance to go head-to-head with Mr Cuomo, and her team fear she could be disadvantaged by freezing temperatures at the venue.
So is it just a diva demand, or part of a wider problem where women are left chilly in the workplace?

3選を目指す現職のCuomo知事に対して、それを阻もうという女優のNixon候補が直接対決することになっているようですが、争点は政策などではなく、討論会場の室温設定という、聞いたことのない話です。
どうしてこんなことになっているのか、詳しくは記事を読んでいただければと思いますが、低めの温度設定を好む知事に対して、女性にとって寒すぎる室温では討論で不利に立たされると主張するNixon候補の主張が真っ向から対立しているようです。
まだまだ暑い日が続いています。ニュースではエアコンを適切に使って熱中症を予防しましょうという呼びかけが当たり前になっています。
ところで女性の方々にはオフィスなどのエアコン温度設定が低すぎて寒い、という苦情はよく聞くところです。ガウンを羽織ったり、ひざ掛けを準備している光景はあまり珍しくないもののように思えます。
女性側の主張としては、オフィスの室温設定などはスーツやジャケットを着た男性向けに設定されており、スカートや薄着の女性を無視しているということがあるようです。
これを真っ当な意見と見るか、あるいは"a diva demand"なのか？
この"diva demand"とはどういう意味でしょうか？
American Heritage Dictionaryには"diva"の定義に、
One who demands that attention be paid to his or her needs, especially without regard to anyone else's needs or feelings.
という俗語の意味が載っていました。
つまりは無茶な要求をする女性、という意味です。
"diva"とは女神の意味なのですが、あたかも自身が神のごとく、周りに対して無茶な要求をする、ということかと思われます。

昨日に続き、故マケイン上院議員に関するニュース記事からの引用です。

英語では、"half-mast"、もしくは"half-staff"と言いますが、マケイン氏の死去に際してホワイトハウスが半旗にしなかったことで批判を浴びているようです。
トランプ大統領とは大統領選で争ったオハイオ州知事のKasich氏はホワイトハウスの対応を批判し、マケイン氏の埋葬まで半旗を掲げるよう州全体に通達を出したとのことです。
さて、埋葬を意味する単語ですが、"burial"のほかに、
interment
という単語があることを知りました。
インターネット（"internet"）、ではありません（笑）
"inter-ment"です。
ちなみに動詞（埋葬する）は"inter"となるのですが、語源を見て納得です。
"inter-"のter-の部分は、大地を意味するラテン語terraから来ているのです。

嫌われ者の大統領 ― ostracize
脳腫瘍で闘病していたマケイン上院議員が週末に亡くなりました。
マケイン氏はトランプ大統領と対立していましたが、死ぬ直前には、トランプ大統領には自分の葬式には来てほしくないと発言していたことが報じられています。

トランプ氏の敢えて対立を煽るような政治姿勢が影を落としていることは事実ですが、恐らくは村八分にされているという自覚はないのでしょうね。

putsch
オーストラリアのターンブル首相がこの週末に辞任に追い込まれました。自党内の離反勢力により引きずりおろされた格好であると邦紙でも報道されています。
下記に引用するのは先週の記事で、辞任する前のものです。

ちなみに発音はカタカナで書くと、プッチ、に近いです。

6月の歴史的な米朝会談から2か月あまり、アメリカと北朝鮮の間に再び暗雲が垂れ込めてきた模様です。
トランプ大統領が、核兵器廃棄の具体的な進展が見られないことを理由に、ポンペオ国務長官の訪朝をキャンセルすることを表明しました。
On Friday, President Trump threw out another surprise via Twitter with the sudden cancelation of a trip to Pyongyang by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The president’s three-part tweet cited the lack of “sufficient progress” concerning North Korea’s denuclearization, pointed the finger at China for North Korean intransigence because of the U.S.-China trade war, and sent his “warmest regards and respect to Chairman Kim.”
What to make of this latest round of policy by tweets? It has been no surprise that denuclearizing North Korea is a slow process, if it is even possible at all.
