A family taking off on a road trip have seen their holiday plans hit a slight speed bump after they were pulled over by police.

The family was travelling along a major British motorway in their VW Arteon when police pulled them over and made a surprise discovery in the back of the car.

Seven people were travelling in the vehicle, according to Manchester's North West Motorway Police. The problem? The VW sedan is only a five seater, with two extra youngsters found lying in the boot while the car travelled at high speeds.

The driver was booked for three offences, including carrying two passengers with no seatbelts and using a vehicle for an unsuitable purpose.
(Nick Whigham. Shock find in car boot after holidaying family pulled over: 'Unbelievable!' Yahoo! News. July 30, 2023.)

If you ask people what they think of when they hear “X,” you will likely get a host of answers:

A lost love.

For a whole lot of people, the latter best describes how they are feeling about Twitter, the live social conversation app. It once was an inviting place, a place of stimulation and information. But lately it had become far less comfortable to hang out there, thanks to an erratic personality, overbearing demands and increasing levels of ugly hate speech. It was barely recognizable anymore.

So now, for many, it’s just another… “ex.”
(Bill Carter. Opinion: Musk could now be in charge of a complete brand blowout for Twitter. CNN. July 25, 2023.)

A former spouse or partner.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

The heat wave that has scorched much of the American South and Southwest is now spreading through the Midwest, bringing temperatures above 100 degrees, dangerous conditions for millions of people and pleas from state and local officials to avoid spending time outdoors.

The extreme heat and humidity was expected to spread misery across the region for several days, meteorologists said, warning that there was also a risk of tornadoes in Indiana and Michigan. In cities like St. Louis; Wichita, Kan.; and Kansas City, Mo., temperatures could be 10 to 20 degrees above normal, and heat index readings, which consider both temperature and humidity, will reach into the 100s.

And the blistering weather arrived just as another health menace swept in: Canadian wildfire smoke that has once again fouled the air over parts of the Midwest.

Public health authorities in Detroit encouraged residents to go to libraries and recreation centers to avoid the double whammy of high heat and unhealthy air.
(Julie Bosman. Blistering Heat Spreads to U.S. Midwest as Wildfire Smoke Lingers. New York Times. July 26, 2023.)

blistering heat

reorient

(Bloomberg) -- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign has now laid off a third of his staff, accelerating job cuts as he tries to get his struggling bid for the Republican nomination back on track.

Roughly two dozen staffers have been let go as part of the changes as donors and supporters press DeSantis to salvage his campaign. He trails GOP frontrunner Donald Trump by a wide margin in polls.

The team has sought to calm donor fears that DeSantis is missing his moment. At a retreat for major donors over the weekend in Park City, Utah, Peck acknowledged the campaign had overspent during its first quarter and promised donors it would adopt a leaner operation moving forward, according to a person briefed on the session.

DeSantis and his wife, Casey, who is one of his closest political advisers, want the campaign reoriented by September, when they believe Americans will start to tune into the 2024 race, said one fundraiser who attended the Park City retreat.
(Nancy Cook. Ron DeSantis Lays Off More Than a Third of His 2024 Campaign Staff. Yahoo! News. July 26, 2023.)

want the campaign reoriented by September

AWOL

The American-led U.N. Command in South Korea said Monday a conversation was started with Pyongyang about a U.S. soldier who ran into North Korea last week across, amidst nuclear-submarine movements in the area.

“None of us know where this is going to end,” a British lieutenant general and deputy commander at U.N. Command, Andrew Harrison, said during a news conference in Seoul.

Harrison refused to give more details on a timeframe, or whether the conversation was constructive with the North Koreans, citing the sensitivity of the discussions. He also declined to comment on the AWOL Pvt. Travis King’s condition.
(UN Command confirms contact with N. Korea over AWOL U.S. soldier. i24 News. July 24, 2023.)

absent without leave

A Tesco sales assistant who had worked at the supermarket for 26 years was unfairly dismissed after she was “erroneously” declared absent without leave while she was on holiday, a tribunal has ruled.

The London South Croydon tribunal found Julie Churcher was unable to respond to the letters inviting her to disciplinary hearings, nor could she appeal her eventual dismissal, because she was away.
(Elizabeth Howlett. Customer sales assistant sacked for being AWOL when she was actually on holiday was unfairly dismissed, tribunal rules. People Management Magazine. July 24, 2023.)
