酷暑 ― scorcher

日本列島では猛暑が続いています。

昨夕のニュースでは、浜松で最高気温41.1度を記録し、埼玉県熊谷市で2018年7月に観測された最高気温タイを記録したというニュースでした。

猛暑のニュースは日本国内に限らず、海の向こうのアメリカでも大変な暑さに喘いでいるようです。


Parts of the Southern California desert experienced record-breaking heat on Sunday with Death Valley hitting 130 degrees — the hottest temperature the area has recorded since July 1913, according to the National Weather Service.

While other areas didn't experience that drastic of a scorcher, the whole state is still in the midst of a heatwave, and most of Southern California is under an excessive heat warning through 10 p.m. Thursday. Hot and humid conditions are expected for the rest of the week for the Coachella Valley with temperatures hovering between 113 and 117 degrees.

カリフォルニア州南部のDeath Valleyは砂漠の広がる、アメリカ国内でも気温が高温となることで知られる国立公園ですが、週末日曜日に華氏130度以上（摂氏では何と54.4度！）を記録したということです。

さて、暑いのを表現するのに、猛暑では足らず、酷暑などとも言いますが、引用した記事では、


scorcher


という表現が使われています。

"scorch"という動詞は見たことがあります。表面を焦がすとか炙るという意味の動詞です。

その"scorch"に名詞を形成する接尾辞-erを付けたものが"scorcher"ですが、ランダムハウス英和辞書では「酷暑の日」とあります。

気象庁の用語では気温35度以上を「猛暑日」と言い、「酷暑日」というのは非公式な表現だそうです。
