他動詞の"deal" ― deal a blow to~

"deal"という動詞で最初に思い浮かべるのは、"deal with"という自動詞の動詞句です。学校の英語で、前置詞with以下にくる名詞を”扱う”、”処理する”、という意味で暗記するのが普通かと思います。

一方、動詞の"deal"にはもう１つ、配る、分配する、という意味の他動詞の意味・用法もあります。こちらの意味になじみがあまりないのは私だけでしょうか？

下記の記事を読んだ時に一瞬戸惑いました。（勉強不足！？）


The most closely watched experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease proved ineffective in its first large clinical trial, dealing a blow to the field, to a theory about the cause of the disease, and to the three companies behind the drug.

Pfizer, which is one of those companies, announced late Monday that the drug, bapineuzumab, did not improve either cognition or daily functioning of patients compared to a placebo in the Phase 3 trial.

"deal a blow"という表現を知らなかったということにつきるのかもしれませんが、他動詞の"deal"を意識すれば戸惑うほどではないかもしれません。

引用した記事ですが、製薬大手のファイザーが実施していた、アルツハイマー治療薬の大規模臨床試験で、治験薬が疾患に対して効果がないという結果が出たそうです。

この結果は関係者には大きな打撃です。"dealing a blow to"という表現は文字通り、打撃（a blow）を分配する＝お見舞いする（deal）ということであり、影響を受けるのは、前置詞to以下の人たち（関係者）ということになります。

この表現を知っていれば当たり前の話になってしまうのでわざわざ取り上げるような価値もなさそうなものですが、この記事での用法の面白さは前置詞toで示される関係者が3つの方面に渡っていることではないかと思います。

to a theory about the cause of the disease,
and to the three companies behind the drug


（臨床）現場の人達とアルツハイマーという疾患の発症原因を云々する人々、そして開発に携わった製薬会社（3社！）、まさに"deal a blow to"という表現の出番！ではないでしょうか。
