何と訳す？ ― wink and nod

アメリカ政府が人魚の存在を否定 ― 確か、そんなヘッドラインだったと思いますが、Yahoo! Japanのトップニュースでした。何じゃそりゃ？と思いませんでしたか？

人魚なんかいる訳ない、という人もいるでしょうし、なんでアメリカの政府がそんなことを今になって公式に表明するのか、と眉を顰めた人もいるでしょう。私は何となく気になりながらもその記事にアクセスはしなかったのですが、昼休みにグーグルニュースで海外ニュースをチェックしていたらやはり人魚の話題が記事になっており、それを読んでみました。


There is no evidence that mermaids exist, a US government scientific agency has said.

The National Ocean Service made the unusual declaration in response to public inquiries following a TV show on the mythical creatures.

It is thought some viewers may have mistaken the programme for a documentary.

"No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found," the service wrote in an online post.

何でこんな話になっているのか少し分かりました。Discovery Channelという、いわゆるサイエンス系の番組を流すチャンネルで人魚の特集番組があったそうなのですが、内容はフィクションであるにも関わらず、ドキュメンタリーと勘違い、つまり事実と勘違いした視聴者からの問い合わせが相次いだことが原因のようです。


The inquiries followed May's broadcast of Mermaids: The Body Found, on the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet network.

The programme was a work of fiction but its wink-and-nod format apparently led some viewers to believe it was a science education show, the Discovery Channel has acknowledged.

さて、ドキュメンタリーと誤解させるような構成と内容が原因だったようですが、そのことを言うのに、


its wink-and-nod format


という表現を使っています。聞き慣れない表現です。"wink-and-nod"とはどういう意味なのでしょうか？色々な辞書を当たったのですが、エントリは見当たりません。ネット検索やコーパスで用例を検索しますと、多くはありませんが実例が確認できます。例えば以下のような用例です。


Pena Nieto, a state governor and the husband of a popular telenovela actress, says the PRI’s days of vote-rigging and graft are behind it. He has also pledged not to cut any deals with organized crime; in the past, the party has been accused of a wink-and-nod relationship with the nation’s drug cartels, trading lax enforcement for peace.

As it becomes evident that the Russian government is plagued with rampant lying, corruption, graft, bribery, greed, "wink and nod" management and special deals for friends, it brings to mind the old adage about birds of a feather flocking together.

wink（瞬きをする、目配せをする）とnod（頷く、承諾する、同意する）という2つの単語の組み合わせであることを考えれば上記2つの用例における”wink and nod”の意味は自ずと明らかだと思います。また、”wink”には不正を見逃す、見て見ぬふりをするという意味もありました。ここでは、そのような意味がぴったりきます。

しかしながら、人魚の番組の記事における、”a wink-and-nod format”という部分を解釈するのにはどうもしっくりきません。引き続き色々な用例を見てみましたが、近しい用例が見当たらず、しばらく悶々とします。

人魚の記事のコンテクストから解釈するならば、番組の”format”（構成や内容、見せ方）が、視聴者が思わず勘違いしてしまうようなものであった、ということができると思います。それを、”format”の出来の良さと言いたいのか、誤解を与える（misleading）と言いたいのか、はたまた写実的と言いたいのか、つまり形容詞にあたる”wink-and-nod”の意味が分からないのです。

かなりの用例を見たつもりですが、適切な訳を見つけ出すことができていません。唯一、下記の用例にあたって、少しだけひらめきました。

ここで、"wink-and-nod"は、"rumor"という名詞を修飾しています。引用の最後に"that seems plausible"とありますが、"wink-and-nod"はこの”plausible”（もっともらしい）を意味しているのではないかと推測します。人魚の記事でも、"wink-and-nod"を"plausible"に置き換えることができると思います。もっともらしい、いかにもありそうな（plausible）、見せ方、演出の方法（format）、という解釈です。

とは言え、”wink”と”nod”の2語からどうして”plausible”の意味になるのか、ということがしっくりきませんし、似たような用例を他に確認できていません。1つ考えられることは、”wink”にも”nod”にも、同意、承諾の意味がありますが、


同意・承諾
↓
（存在を）認める
↓
ありそうな、もっともらしい


というような意味の発展があったのではないかということです。ややこじつけのようで、あまり自信はありませんが、現時点ではそのように考えるしか納得性がなく、どなたかご存知の方ありましたらお教え下さい。
