不覚にも・・・ ― manage to ~

まず下記の引用をご覧ください。

オーストラリア政府が運営する、Stay Smart Onlineというウェブサイトで、当該サイトの利用者の個人情報流出するという不祥事があったということです。Stay Smart Onlineというウェブサイト名から、インターネット利用における啓蒙的な情報提供を行っているようなサイトだと想像がつきますが、そのサイトからして情報流出の舞台となったことが批判を浴びそうです。記事のタイトル（Stay Smart Online unsmartly loses user data offline）にもそのことを揶揄しているのが読み取れます。

さて、引用した部分で、"managed to lose details of a large number of its subscribers"とありますが、"manage(d) to"という表現にあれっ？と思った方もいるのではないでしょうか？

"manage to"という表現は、


（首尾よく）やり遂げる；どうにか成し遂げる


といった意味で使われるということは恐らく高等学校の英語くらいで習うのではないかと思いますが、この引用箇所においてその解釈ですとおかしなことになります。首尾よく情報流出させた、とか、何とか情報流出させることができた、などという表現はあり得ない、といいますか、とんちんかんだからです。

そこで辞書をチェックしてみてください。"manage to"には、首尾よく～、なんとか～しおおせる、といった意味とは別に、反語的な意味で用いられ、


（不覚にも）～する；（愚かにも）～してしまう


といった意味もあるのです。

さて、このような反語的な意味での用法をもう少し収集してみました。


For Juliet had had two affairs during the years that Penelope was between fourteen and twenty-one, and during both of these she had managed to fall hectically in love, in a way that left her ashamed afterward. One of the men was much older than she, and solidly married.

意外とお目にかかりませんが、用法としてはごく普通に使われるもののようです。
