LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities investigating a bizarre bank heist on Thursday searched the home of a bank manager who was told to strap what she believed was a bomb to her midsection and was forced to order employees to "take out all the money" from her branch.

Two masked gunmen got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from the Bank of America when it opened Wednesday morning, but no one was injured in the robbery. No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon.

実は、"heist"という単語を知らなかったので今日取り上げるわけですが、"bank"（銀行の）heist、ということですから、"suspect sought"とあることとも併せて、恐らく強盗の意味であることは想像がつきます。

"heist"を引いてみると確かに強盗の意味です。語源は、"hoist"の転化とあります。"hoist"を引くとこちらは、持ち上げる、揚げる、といったよく使われる意味に加えて、やはり俗語として、


押し入る、盗む


という意味があることが分かりました。持ち上げる、という意味から連想するのは、"shoplift"（万引きする）、という単語ですが、こちらも持ち上げるという意味の"lift"が含まれており、盗みという行為に持ち上げるという動作を関連付けている点で、ある意味共通点です。

"heist"をAmerican Heritage DictionaryやMerriam Websterで引くと、


robbery
theft


などという単語が定義に使われています。盗みを示す一般的な表現ですが、一方、Wikipediaでは、


A heist is a robbery from an institution such as a bank or a museum, or any robbery in which there is a large haul of loot.


とあり、こちらの方が説明がより具体的なのですが、万引きよりももっとスケールの大きい強盗、というのがふさわしいでしょう。

今回の事件では、バンカメ（Bank of America）の女性マネージャーが自宅で二人組に襲われ、パイプ爆弾のようなものを無理矢理装着させられ、勤務先の銀行まで連れて行かれ、そこでありったけの金を袋に詰めるよう脅されたということです。

何だか映画のワンシーンを見るような話ですが、まさしくハリウッドスタイル、ハリウッド映画に見られるようなお手並みのように思われます。

ちなみに、この手の強盗をテーマにした映画のことを、"heist film"と言うそうです。
