以前にシャツ（shirt）に関する成句を取り上げたことがありますが、今日の単語もその類の1つと言えるでしょう。

"shirt-sleeve"とは、上着を着ていない、という意味です。上着と言うのはもちろん背広の上着、もしくはジャケットのことですが、上着を着用することはビジネスシーンでも礼儀の1つとされます。

上着を着用しないでいるというのは、くだけた雰囲気の場では許容され、それ故、"shirt-sleeve"という形容詞は、


形式張らない、打ち解けた、率直な、ざっくばらんの


という意味で用いられます。

米国オバマ大統領と中国の習近平（Xi Jingping）総書記の会談は、ドレスコードこそ"shirt-sleeve"な演出がされたようですが、会談の中身は通訳を介したギクシャクしたものだったようで、相手のふところの探り合い、といった感じだったのでしょうか。
