共和党でかつて大統領選の指名候補をドナルド・トランプ氏と争っていた、マルコ・ルビオ上院議員がトランプ氏支持に回りました。
かつて敵同士で中傷合戦していたところが一転、です。
ルビオ氏は、トランプ氏の手が小さいことを揶揄していましたが、その事についうても正式に謝罪したそうです。
WASHINGTON – Marco Rubio said Sunday he offered a private mea culpa to Donald Trump for mocking the tycoon’s “small hands.”
“I apologized to him for that,” Rubio told “State of the Union.” “I said: ‘You know, I’m sorry that I said that. It’s not who I am and I shouldn’t have done it. I didn’t say it in front of the cameras, I didn’t want any political benefit.”
In one of the low moments of the GOP presidential fight, Rubio told a rally in Virginia Feb. 28 that The Donald can’t be trusted because he’s got “small hands.”
“He’s like 6’2” which is why I don’t understand why his hands are the size of someone who is 5’2″. Have you seen his hands?” Rubio said.

"mea culpa"というのは、ラテン語の表現であり、英語にすると、
through my fault
という意味になります。ラテン語に詳しい方にはすぐにお分かりかと思いますが、"my fault"の奪格が"mea culpa"です。教会で懺悔の際に使われるフレーズが人口に膾炙するようになったものですが、用例からもお分かりのように、「謝罪」という意味の名詞で使われる方が普通となっています。

返信削除今日はなかなか難しい単語ですね。ラテン語について一切知りませんので、奪格という概念も理解していません。今はただ「mea culpa」が「謝罪」を意味する名詞ということがわかりました。
