こんな意味もあったの？ ― root

史上最大の番狂わせと呼ぶに相応しい結果です。

アメリカ大統領にドナルド・トランプ氏が選出されました。当初泡沫候補と貶され、数々の暴言・失言、大統領の肩書きにおよそ相応しくないと思われる数々の過去の所業・・・、にも関わらずです。

それでも、これが民主主義というものでしょうか、敗れたヒラリー・クリントン氏は敗北を認めてトランプ氏に電話で祝意を伝え、オバマ大統領もトランプ氏をホワイトハウスに招き、スムーズな政権移行を約束すると発言したということです。

さて、記事を引用します。


President Barack Obama today said he is ready to welcome President-elect Donald Trump to the White House to ensure a "successful transition between our presidencies."

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country," Obama said in a statement in the Rose Garden. "The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy, and over the next few months we are going to show that to the world."

In a phone call at around 3:30 a.m., Obama extended an invitation to Trump to meet at the White House on Thursday.

オバマ大統領の発言に、


"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country"


とありますが、ここでの"root(ing)"という表現におや、と思いました。

振り返ってみれば単純に"root"という単語を知らなかっただけなのですが、英語の初学者にとって基本単語でもある"root"は「根っこ」の意味で、このコンテクストでは解釈できないことは言うまでもありません。

"root for"という動詞句であることも明らかですが、この"root"は「根っこ」の"root"とは別単語であることが辞書を引いて分かった次第です。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの定義では、


to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team
to wish the success or lend support to someone or something


という意味で、声援を送る、といった意味です。

この"root"は、"rout"が変化したものだと辞書の語源欄にありますが、"rout"というのは吠える、怒鳴る、という意味で、こちらもあまり馴染みがないのではないでしょうか。

オバマ大統領が国民に向けたメッセージですから、"rooting for"は特に凝った言い回しでもなさそうですが、この表現を知らなかった私は1つ勉強になりました。

一方、トランプ大統領を取り巻く現実は反対派が国内主要都市で抗議デモを行い騒乱が発生しているなど、"we are now all rooting for his success..."とは程遠い現状ではありますが。
