Draconian

人工妊娠中絶は非常にナイーヴな話題で、アメリカなどでは賛成派と反対派が激しく衝突するテーマで、選挙でも争点になるほどです。

私はこのテーマについてあまり深く考えたことがないのですが、下記の記事を読んで、中絶に対する考え方には各国各様であることを知りました。

世界196カ国のうち、中絶が許容されているのは58カ国に留まります。なお、母体の生命に関わる場合にのみ中絶を認めるという国を含めると134カ国になるそうです。これは、残る62カ国では中絶は原則認められない、ということになります。さらに、このうち6カ国では例外なく中絶を禁じており、母体に生命の危険があっても、あるいは産まれてくる子に重度の障害があることが分かっていても中絶が認められないということです。

It means that under many circumstances, such as rape, incest, or if the fetus has a severe abnormality, women still must bring a pregnancy to term.

Developing countries, which have the strictest laws around ending a pregnancy, have the highest unsafe abortion rates. It is estimated that around the world, 78,000 deaths result from unsafe abortions every year. These are the countries with the strictest abortion laws around the globe.

さて、記事のタイトルで、


the most draconian abortion laws


と出てきますが、この"draconian"という形容詞は、厳しい、とか厳格な、という意味です。

古代ギリシャの法律家であるDraco（ドラコン）という人の名前に由来するのですが、彼の制定した法律では軽微な罪も死刑になるという厳しいものであったことから、"draconic"（後に、"draconian"）という表現が生まれたそうです。

記事によると中絶を禁止する国は発展途上国に多いそうですが、一方中絶手術による事故が多いことも特徴のようです。
