tough as nails

共和党のマケイン上院議員が脳腫瘍に罹っていることを公表しました。


Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor called a glioblastoma.

His diagnosis was revealed following a procedure last week in which surgeons removed a blood clot from above his left eye. Doctors say his tumor was associated with the blood clot.

お気の毒な話だと思いますが、歳をとればガンの1つや2つは見つかってもおかしくないのかもしれません。
報道を見ていますと、同氏の左眼付近が痛ましく、果たして大丈夫なのかと心配もされます。

多くの人が同じように感じるかと思うのですが、記事では80歳代でのガンというのは治療が難しいとしつつも、下記のような見立てです。


Unfortunately, the 80-year-old's form of cancer is difficult to treat. But Agus says the course of therapy is "tolerable," and if McCain receives treatment in Washington, D.C. he could perhaps continue working in the Senate during that time.

"As everybody alludes to, he's tough as nails," Agus said. "And so cancer has certainly a worthy opponent in this one. He's going to take it on."

"tough as nails"という表現が使われているのですが、これはマケイン氏の強さ（toughness）を言っているものと思われます。

実はこの"tough as nails"というフレーズを手持ちの辞書で確認できなかったのですが、ネット検索をしてもその意味するところが今ひとつピンときません。

"die hard"（簡単には死なない）と同じ意味とするという説明がこの記事ではしっくりきましたが、果たして？

ところで、"nails"とは「爪」のことを指すのか、はたまた「釘」のことを指すのでしょうか？

これも様々な“説”があるみたいで、爪は切ってもまた延びてくることからこの表現が生まれたとするものもあれば、釘は繰り返し金槌で打たれてもヘタレないことから生まれた表現とするものもあり、よく分からないところです。
