その量700万ポンド（約3,000トン以上）ということで、驚愕の量です。


NEW YORK (Reuters) — A New York meat processor is recalling more than 7 million pounds of hot dogs and sausages mostly under the Sabrett brand name after consumers complained about finding small pieces of bone in some of the products, the US Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.

In one case, someone who ate one of the hot dogs suffered a "minor oral injury," the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.

原因となったのはホットドッグに使うソーセージのようです。消費者が骨らしき異物を見つけ、報告したそうですが、記事のタイトルに、


shards of bone


とあるのですが、この"shard"という単語を初めて見ました。

辞書を引くと、


かけら、破片


の意味があると分かりますが、この単語の語源は"shear"（切る、刈る）という動詞と関連していることも分かります。

"sherd"という、やや異なるスペルの単語もありますが、こちらは考古学の専門用語で使われるらしく、古い地層などから出土する土器の破片などを意味するそうです。
