スイカの季節はとうに過ぎてしまいましたが・・・。


A probie Detroit firefighter was axed for “offensive and racially insensitive” behavior for gifting a watermelon to his new firehouse, which is mostly made up of black members, according to a report.

The rookie, 41-year-old Robert Pattison, brought the fruit topped with a pink bow to the Engine 55 firehouse on Sept. 30 – and quickly offended some African-American firefighters, FOX 2 reported.

He was fired after the incident, which he claimed was not meant to be offensive, according to the news outlet.

“There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department,” Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said in a statement, adding that Pattison “engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department.

新人の消防士がスイカ（watermelon）をお土産に持参したことを咎められ、懲戒処分、というニュースです。

なぜスイカを贈ることが問題なのか、分かりませんでした。

記事によると、新人消防士が新しく入隊する際の挨拶として、皆に食べてもらおうと持ってきたスイカが、"offensive"であり、また"racially insensitive"と判断されたようです。

スイカに人種差別を意味するようなものがあるとは知りませんでした。

色々調べてみると、以下のような「事件」も過去にはあったようです。


Boston Herald apologizes for Obama cartoon after backlash

Washington (CNN) -- The Boston Herald and its cartoonist apologized Wednesday for a cartoon that quickly drew criticism on social media for being racist.

A satire on the recent news that an intruder got farther into the White House last month than previously known, the cartoon depicts the intruder sitting in President Obama's bathtub, asking him if he has tried the "watermelon flavored toothpaste."

Critics quickly pounced on the watermelon aspect of the cartoon, arguing the cartoonist was playing off a stereotype that African Americans are particularly fond of the fruit.

知らなかったのですが、"watermelon"と黒人を結びつける発想がアメリカには昔からあるらしく、特に黒人に対する蔑みの意図でスイカを象徴的に扱うような傾向があるようなのです。

上記の引用では、黒人初のアメリカ大統領であるオバマ前大統領を揶揄するような形で「"watermelon"フレーバーの歯磨き粉」が新聞の漫画に用いられたとされます。その後、数多くの批判を受けて漫画の作者が謝罪したというものです。

アメリカにおいて、スイカはある意味「取り扱い注意」と考える必要があるかもしれません。
