CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — A man and a woman were caught having sex in a bathroom at a Tennessee nightclub last week, police said.

A man and a woman were charged with indecent exposure and public intoxication after police in Clarksville, Tenn., said they attempted to have sex in a portable toilet outside of O'Connors Irish Pub on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

トイレで性行為に及んでいたカップルが逮捕されたという話なのですが、記事中、


...having sex in a bathroom...


とありますが、別の箇所では、


... had been fornicating in the restroom...


とあり、この”fornicate”という単語が気になりました。

辞書を引くと、「姦通する」とあります。これは単に”having sex”ではなく、行為の不義性を意味していますが、語源をたどると”fornicate”とは売春婦と交わることを指していたということが分かります。

この”fornicate”という単語はラテン語のfornixから来ているそうですが、fornixとは丸天井の地下室（vaulted cellar）のことで、昔の売春宿というのはこのような場所が典型的であったことに因むようです。
