否定形による強意表現（2） ― iota

今週は否定形で強意表現として用いられる表現を特集しています。

2日目の今日は、


iota


という単語です。

ギリシャ語をご存知の方ならすぐお分かりですが、"iota"はギリシャ語のアルファベットの9番目の文字で、ローマ字ではアイ（I、i）に相当するものです。（小生も大学時代、無謀にもギリシャ語のクラスを取りましたが、アルファベット以外の文法事項などはほとんど忘れてしまいました。というか、修得できませんでした・・・。）

"iota"の文字は（ローマ字のiもそうですが）、大きさ的にも文字の中では一番小さなものです。

従って、少量とか微量を意味するのですが、この"iota"が使われる場合はやはり否定文のコンテクストで、"not an iota of~"というパターンが多いのです。

また、"iota"の場合は、"iota"が文字だからでしょうか、"not an iota of~"と並んで、"not one iota of~"という表現もよく見られます。
