ちょっと長いですが、今日取り上げるのは、

give an inch, they'll take a mile

というフレーズです。慣用句の類と言ってよいかと思います。

1インチは約2.54センチ、1マイルは大体1,600メートル、ですね。

あなたが「1インチ」を与えると、相手は「1マイル」取る、ということなんですが、ちょっとだけの積もりが、結果的に沢山持っていかれてしまう、というのがこの表現の肝です。

つまり、少しでも譲歩しようものなら、要求が過大になり膨らんで、収拾がつかなくなる、というような意味合いが込められています。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは以下のように解説しています。

If you say 'give someone an inch and they'll take a mile', you mean that if you do a small favour for someone, they will become greedy and ask you to do bigger and bigger favours for them and make you regret doing the first favour.

つまりは、下手に出ると相手をつけ上がらせることになる、ということですね。

なお、"they'll take a mile"の部分は可変的で、"a mile"でない場合もあるようです。
