人種差別デモの参加者二人を射殺した白人男性被告の正当防衛が認められて無罪判決となったニュース記事についてはつい先日も取り上げましたが、今日も関連する記事からの引用です。

無罪となったRittenhouse元被告を巡る裁判はメディアで大きく取り上げられましたが、その報道内容が偏向しているという指摘があるようです。


Jesse Watters slammed the mainstream media and President Joe Biden for their comments about Kyle Rittenhouse, saying media used to focus on demonizing politicians but have now turned their focus on everyday Americans.

"The mainstream media has now moved from demonizing politicians to demonizing regular people," Watters said. "I have never seen anybody look so different than what they're portrayed on in the media."

少し引用が長くなってしまいましたが、記事で"demonize"（"demonizing"）という表現が複数回出てきます。

スペルからお分かりのように、"demon"（悪魔）という単語に、他動詞を作る接尾辞-izeが付いたものです。

手元の辞書には、悪魔化する、悪魔のようにする、などと載っています。

言わんとするところは分かるのですが、和訳として悪魔化する、ではちょっと問題があるように思われます。

Merriam-Websterの定義を見てみますと、

to portray (someone or something) as evil or as worthy of contempt or blame

とあり、さらに同義語として"vilify"（中傷する、貶す）とありました。

"demonize"の言わんとするところは誹謗中傷ということであり、悪者扱いする、ということだと思われます。

SNSなど、ネット上での誹謗中傷が未だかつてない程まで社会問題化していますが、Rittenhouse元被告を巡る一部の報道（事実誤認があるという指摘もあります）やアメリカ社会における反応も誹謗中傷と見なされかねない要素が満ちている、ということなのだと思います。

記事の引用が長くなってしまったのですが、後半部分に目を移すと、バイデン大統領までもがその批判の対象とされており、（大統領就任前の昨年に）この誹謗中傷とも取れるコメントをしていた、とあります。

元被告は誹謗中傷に対し、名誉棄損で訴える構えを見せており、今後の動向が注目されるところです。

先日の記事でも取り上げましたが、今回の事件については銃による自衛権を行使したという擁護論と、過剰な正当防衛であるという銃規制論の立場が対立しています。

Rittenhouse元被告が訴追されたことに対してトランプ前大統領は批判的で、元被告を擁護する発言をしていたと言われています。

この問題もやはり、共和対民主という政治対立とは無縁ではありません。
