新型コロナウィルスのワクチン接種を巡って、義務化を進める政府や接種の推進派と、接種強制を拒否する立場の人たちがいることはご存知の通りです。

ファイザー社のワクチンについては、米国で5～11歳の子供に対しても使用が承認されましたが、子供向け番組のセサミストリートを使ったワクチン接種推進キャンペーンがSNSなどで物議を醸しています。

Plenty of Twitter users uttered some less-than-family-friendly words after Sesame Street characters began promoting coronavirus vaccines on social media and CNN. 

On Saturday, CNN’s Erica Hill and Dr. Sanjay Gupta hosted a virtual town hall featuring various characters from the long-running PBS children’s series "Sesame Street." 

This followed the recent announcement from the FDA last month that approved of children ages 5-11 receiving a kid-sized version of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

The CNN town hall was promoted not only by the network and its journalists, but the characters as well. Big Bird’s Twitter account read, "I got the COVID-19 vaccine today! My wing is feeling a little sore, but it'll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy. Ms. @EricaRHill even said I’ve been getting vaccines since I was a little bird. I had no idea!"

同番組の人気キャラクターであるビッグ・バードのツイッターアカウントも援用したワクチン接種推進に、

'Government propaganda for your 5-year-old'

との批判コメント、リツイートが寄せられているようです。

さて、以前に取り上げたかなと思ったのですが、"propaganda"という単語についてです。

日本語でもカタカナで「プロパガンダ」となっていますが、スペルから想像つきますように、ラテン語から来ています。

英単語の"propagate"、"propagation"は、広めること、伝播すること、ですが、これらの単語と同じく、"propaganda"も、元はラテン語の動詞propagareから来ています。

ラテン語動詞propagareの動形容詞（所相的形容詞）と呼ばれる形がpropagandus (-a, -um) で（〜されるべき、というような意味合いです）、その女性形、奪格が、propaganda、です。（つまり、広められるべき、という意味になります。）

そもそもは宗教の用語で使われていたものが、"propaganda"という言葉として切り離されたと語源解説にあります。

カトリック教会が、Congregation de propaganda fide（=Congregation for propagating the truth）、即ち真実を流布するための修道会と呼んでいたもので、教皇グレゴリウス15世が1622年に設立したものと言われています。

このように元々はカトリックの教義を広く流布するという目的だったのが"propaganda"ですが、今や、

The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.

という一般的な意味で用いられるようになっています

意味合いはさらに変容しており、以下の定義に見られるように、広めようとされている内容が誤ったものである、という含みもあります。

ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to help a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.

ワクチン接種の是非は議論のあるところですが、子供に人気のキャラクターを援用して接種を推進するというのはプロパガンダの一種には違いありません。
