過日も当ブログで取り上げたところですが、経営再建中だったスピリット航空が遂に倒産しました。イラン情勢による原油の高騰が同社の財政悪化に追い打ちをかけ、米政府が支援策を検討中とのことでしたがまとまらなかったようです。

Spirit Airlines has almost finished refunding customers for flights abruptly canceled over the weekend as the company folded.

The budget airline left thousands of customers and staff stranded after deciding on Saturday to pull the plug on a business that was struggling for years, before a surge in the price of jet fuel blew a new hole in its budget.

Spirit had scheduled about 4,000 flights through 15 May, according to Reuters.

とあります。"fold"は折り畳むという意味の動詞ですが、自動詞の意味に、

（事業などが）つぶれる、生産を打ち切る、倒産する

という意味があります。この用法はインフォーマルであるとAmerican Heritage Dictionaryにはあります。（なお、American Heritage Dictionaryでは他動詞の意味で載っています。）

日本語で「商売を畳む」という表現がありますから、動詞の"fold"に共通するものがあります。

"fold"には疲労や病気などで崩れ落ちるという意味もあります。直立していられず、くの字に折れ曲がる様子から生じた意味合いです。

Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismsの解説によれば、アメリカ英語では、死ぬ（to die）と同義ともあります。
