アメリカの攻撃を受けたイランはホルムズ海峡を封鎖するという対抗措置に出ました。原油の供給に不安が生じ、世界に混乱をもたらしています。軍事力で大国に敵うはずもないところ、海峡封鎖は対抗措置として奏効しているとも言えます。

イランの次なる一手に、同海峡の海底を通る通信ケーブルの遮断があるそうです。報道によれば、イランの高官らが、海底ケーブルを利用する企業から利用料徴収を検討中、とSNSなどで発言しているとか。拒否すればケーブル網を遮断するという脅しでもあり、そうなるとインターネット通信に大変な混乱が生じると見られています。

Last week, two Iranian state-linked media channels, Tasnim and Fars, suggested Iran could leverage its power over the strait of Hormuz, the 25-mile (40km) stretch between Iran and Oman, by charging US tech companies to use the internet cables that traverse the strait. Tasnim implied this could be a lucrative proposition, netting Iran hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

上記引用で、ホルムズ海峡を通る海底ケーブルはアジア諸国と中東、ヨーロッパを繋いでいるもので、

the sinews of the global internet

と表現されています。

"sinew"とは腱のことで、体の様々な部位において筋肉と骨を結びつける繊維組織のことですが、比喩的に、システムや構造を支える柱となるもの、「大黒柱」というような意味合いがあります。

語源的にはゲルマン語系で、繋ぐという原義の印欧祖語から来ています。以前取り上げましたが、ラテン語nervusは腱と神経の両方の意味がありますが、同じ印欧祖語のようです。
