zip on fastball

来年行われるアメリカ大統領選の候補者は民主、共和両党でだいたい出揃ったというところかと思われます。

少し前に共和党の候補者の公開討論会が行われましたが、トランプ元大統領は出席せず、注目が集まったのはやはりフロリダ州知事のデサンティス氏だったと記憶します。

そのデサンティス氏はトランプ氏との確執も取り沙汰されてきたところ、ここに至ってトランプ氏への反撃姿勢に転じたようです。

今日読んだCNNの記事から引用します。

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday delivered some of the sharpest criticism of Donald Trump to date, blaming the former president for his own defeat in 2020 and suggesting his chief rival in the GOP nominating fight lacked the energy to lead the country once again.

In an unmistakable shot at Trump’s age and stamina, DeSantis quipped, “We don’t need any more presidents that have lost the zip on their fastball.” He said the party’s nomination shouldn’t be a coronation, especially for “anybody that couldn’t even stop Joe Biden.”

デサンティス氏は前回の大統領選で敗北したトランプ氏にもはや勢いは無く、再び大統領として国を引っ張っていく力も無いと切って捨てたようです。

そして発言が引用されていますが、

“We don’t need any more presidents that have lost the zip on their fastball.”

とあります。

ここでの"zip on fastball"という表現を取り上げたいと思います。

"zip"にはいくつかの意味がありますが、郵便番号（zip code）の"zip"ではなく、また、ジッパー（zipper）のことでもありません。

ここでの"zip"は弾丸などが飛ぶ時の「ピュッ」とか「ビュンッ」という音のことで、擬音語です。また、スピードや勢いを意味し、元気とか活気、勢力という含意もあります。

"fastball"というのは、文字通り速い球、速球のことで、野球において投手が投げることができる最高速度の投球を言います。

デサンティス氏の発言は野球の表現を喩えに使ったものなのですが、"zip on fastball"については、以下の説明が理解を助けてくれます。

1. This is a term used to describe a pitcher’s fastball in baseball. When a pitcher is said to have some "zip" on his fastball, it’s a positive description usually meaning that it has a high velocity or it is very hard to hit.

ここから分かるのは"zip on fastball"という表現は、投手として速球を投げることのできる能力の評価基準を指しているということかと思います。その"zip"を失えば、投手としての評価にも翳りが見える、ということになります。

よって、デサンティス氏の発言を和訳すると、トランプ氏は往時の勢いをもはや失った、というところかと思われます。

年齢的なところもほのめかしていると思われますが、デサンティス氏にしてみれば、勢いを無くした年寄りは退場、次は若い自分の出番だ、というところでしょうか。

2023年のノーベル物理学賞が欧米の3氏に授与されることが発表されました。

ニュース記事などによりますと、電子（electron）の動きを観測するためにごく短い時間だけ光るレーザー技術を開発したことが評価されたということです。

同じタイミングで発表された医学賞、生理学賞の方は、新型コロナウィルスのワクチン開発につながったメッセンジャーRNA（mRNA）の研究者に授与されましたが、一般人にはこちらの方が馴染みが深いせいか、物理学賞の授賞理由は素人にはピンと来ません。

ニューヨークタイムズ紙から引用です。

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier on Tuesday for techniques that illuminate the subatomic realm of electrons, providing a new perspective into a previously unexplored domain.

電子の動くスピードというにはものすごい速いそうで、何と秒速43マイル（！？）なんだそうです。故に電子の挙動を観測することはこれまで困難とされていました。

電子の挙動を観察するためにはごく短い時間だけ光るフラッシュのような技術が求められていたということなのですが、「ごく短い時間」というのがこれまた常人の理解を超えた世界の話で、

attosecond

という単位なのだそうです。これは10のマイナス18乗秒（one quintillionth）のことで、日本語では「アト秒」と訳されています。

To study the movement of electrons, the scientists had to use pulses of light that last only on the scale of attoseconds; an attosecond is one quintillionth of a second. The number of attoseconds in a single second is the same as the number of all the seconds that have elapsed since the universe burst into existence 13.8 billion years ago, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prizes.

上述の通り、"attosecond"のatto-は、10のマイナス18乗を表す接頭辞なんですが、国際単位系（SI）で定められているものです。

調べてみると、小生も「マイクロ」、「ナノ」、「ピコ」までは聞いたことがありますが、その次が「フェムト」、次いで「アト」と続きます。

atto-という接頭辞はデンマーク語の数詞で18を表すattenから来ています。

ちなみに、「フェムト」（10のマイナス15乗）もデンマーク語で15を表すfemtenから来ています。

pro tempore

米下院議長を務めるマッカーシー共和党議員が議長を解任されるという、前代未聞の事態が発生したと報じられています。

数日前から解任動議に関する報道を目にしていました。詳しく読んでいませんでしたが、身内であるはずの共和党内からも解任を求める声が一部で高まっていたもようです。

民主党寄りなところがあるマッカーシー氏に対する不満があったようですが、解任決議に対する賛成票は民主党とマッカーシー氏に反発する一部の共和党議員合わせて216票で、反対票をわずか6票上回るものだったということですから、皮肉なものです。

Washington — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his leadership position in a historic vote on Tuesday after a far-right revolt over his reliance on Democrats to pass funding to avert a government shutdown.

The final vote was 216-210, with eight Republicans joining all the Democrats to vote to remove McCarthy. It's the first time a House speaker has been removed in a no-confidence vote.

マッカーシー氏が議長を解任された結果、後任には共和党のマクヘンリー議員が"pro tempore"で就く、と記事にあります。

"pro tempore"というのは臨時の、一時的な、という意味のラテン語です。

ラテン語tempusは"time"の意で、"pro tempore"は英語に置き換えると、

flywheel effect

米国独占禁止法（反トラスト法）違反に問われているグーグルの裁判で、マイクロソフトのCEO、Satya Nadella氏が出廷、検索エンジン市場におけるグーグルの独占について証言したそうです。

マイクロソフトの検索エンジンBingは苦戦を強いられており、グーグル一強の市場ではイノベーションが阻害されていると主張したそうです。

When it comes to online search, it's Google's web and everyone else is playing in it, according to rival Microsoft.

That was the essence of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's testimony in federal court on Monday as part of the government's antitrust trial against Google.

Nadella氏は今日のネットは事実上「グーグルウェブ」になっているとコメントし、グーグルのビジネスモデルがウェブを席巻している現状を嘆きました。

記事は以下のように続きます。

The government has tried to make the case that Google's dominance, aided by these exclusive deals, creates a flywheel effect, where greater exposure to users leads to more data to make Google's search results better and attracts more advertisers to the product. That, in turn, generates more revenue that can be used to fund these massive distribution deals.

グーグルの独占に至る要因に関して、

flywheel effect

という言葉が出てきます。

"flywheel"とは日本語では「弾み車（はずみぐるま）」などと訳されるようですが、機械の専門用語としては、一定以上の力をかけると慣性で回り続ける回転体（機構）の事を言うようです。

A flywheel is a mechanical device that uses momentum to store energy: Once the heavy wheel gets moving, its own weight and momentum keep it moving with minimal to no effort.

つまり、回転させるための最初のエフォートは必要ですが、一旦弾みがついたならば、以降は惰性で動力が得られるということであり、そうした含みから、経済、経営のコンテクストにおいて、初期の戦術、戦略が功を奏して、継続的な利益や企業の持続的な成長が生まれることを指すようになったものです。

グーグルがまさにそうで、同社の検索エンジンはより多くのユーザーに使用されることによって精度を高め、さらにユーザーを獲得、それによって広告収入増に繋がり・・・、という、"flywheel effect"により今ある独占体制を築いたということなのです。

この"flywheel effect"という言葉ですが、アメリカの経営コンサルタントであるジム・コリンズ氏の著書「Good to Great」（2001年）の中で使われて広まったそうです。（邦題「ビジョナリーカンパニー〜」と聞いて、オフィスの本棚で見かけたのを思い出しました。）

high and dry

自動車の盗難被害に関するニュース記事です。

オーストラリアでは自動車の盗難が急増しているそうで、統計上では11分に1件という頻度で発生しているそうです。

Thousands of Australians every year are left high and dry by this crime committed every 11 minutes.

Devilish criminals have been clocked committing an unlikely crime every 11 minutes in Australia.

引用した記事のリード部分ですが、

Australians... are left high and dry by this crime...

とあります。

"high and dry"という表現を知らなかったのですが、

left high and dry

というフレーズで、途方に暮れて、という意味になるようです。

直訳すると、高いところ（high）で、また乾いている（dry）、というようなことになりますが、これは船について言っているものなんだそうです。

つまり、船が岸に打ち上げられてしまって航行できない状態を指しており、そこから、行き詰まってしまった状態、見捨てられてしまった状態を指す慣用表現になったようです。

ランダムハウス英和辞書に以下のような例文が引き合いに出されています。

We missed the last bus and were left high and dry. 

私たちは終バスに乗り遅れ途方に暮れていた。

クルマは日常生活に必要な足ですから、それが盗まれたとあっては確かに途方に暮れようというものです。

英語にはこのような、船舶に由来する表現というものがよくあります。
