zip on fastball

来年行われるアメリカ大統領選の候補者は民主、共和両党でだいたい出揃ったというところかと思われます。

少し前に共和党の候補者の公開討論会が行われましたが、トランプ元大統領は出席せず、注目が集まったのはやはりフロリダ州知事のデサンティス氏だったと記憶します。

そのデサンティス氏はトランプ氏との確執も取り沙汰されてきたところ、ここに至ってトランプ氏への反撃姿勢に転じたようです。

今日読んだCNNの記事から引用します。

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday delivered some of the sharpest criticism of Donald Trump to date, blaming the former president for his own defeat in 2020 and suggesting his chief rival in the GOP nominating fight lacked the energy to lead the country once again.

In an unmistakable shot at Trump’s age and stamina, DeSantis quipped, “We don’t need any more presidents that have lost the zip on their fastball.” He said the party’s nomination shouldn’t be a coronation, especially for “anybody that couldn’t even stop Joe Biden.”

デサンティス氏は前回の大統領選で敗北したトランプ氏にもはや勢いは無く、再び大統領として国を引っ張っていく力も無いと切って捨てたようです。

そして発言が引用されていますが、

“We don’t need any more presidents that have lost the zip on their fastball.”

とあります。

ここでの"zip on fastball"という表現を取り上げたいと思います。

"zip"にはいくつかの意味がありますが、郵便番号（zip code）の"zip"ではなく、また、ジッパー（zipper）のことでもありません。

ここでの"zip"は弾丸などが飛ぶ時の「ピュッ」とか「ビュンッ」という音のことで、擬音語です。また、スピードや勢いを意味し、元気とか活気、勢力という含意もあります。

"fastball"というのは、文字通り速い球、速球のことで、野球において投手が投げることができる最高速度の投球を言います。

デサンティス氏の発言は野球の表現を喩えに使ったものなのですが、"zip on fastball"については、以下の説明が理解を助けてくれます。

ここから分かるのは"zip on fastball"という表現は、投手として速球を投げることのできる能力の評価基準を指しているということかと思います。その"zip"を失えば、投手としての評価にも翳りが見える、ということになります。

よって、デサンティス氏の発言を和訳すると、トランプ氏は往時の勢いをもはや失った、というところかと思われます。

年齢的なところもほのめかしていると思われますが、デサンティス氏にしてみれば、勢いを無くした年寄りは退場、次は若い自分の出番だ、というところでしょうか。
