野次馬、暴徒、扇動家

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、"The lowest or coarsest class of people"という定義も見られます。”大衆”という訳語も見られるのですが、しっくりきません。しかしながら、人々を焚き付けて暴動などを起こさせるのは貴族階級というよりも、どちらかと言えば社会の下層に位置する人間というのは歴史が示すところかも知れません。

ところで、rabbleには、”かくはん棒”という訳語もあるようです。”かくはん棒”はこれまたしっくりきませんが、AHDでは、"An iron bar with one end bent like a rake, used to stir and skim molten iron in puddling”、などと定義されています。以前、rake upのところで取り上げましたが、”ほじくりかえす”のと同様、物事を掻き回すのは扇動家の得意とするところでしょう。

"rake up"にしろ、"rabble"にしろ、農耕具や鉄工の道具に語源を見ている共通点が興味深いです。

"rabble-rouser"という表現があります。また、これから派生した（多くの辞書で逆成、つまり名詞表現から派生した動詞）"rubble-rouse"という表現もあります。
