早いもので、このブログをスタートして約２ヶ月、投稿数にして５０を超えることになりました。

ざっと見渡してみますと、タグでアルファベット別に分けているのですが、j,o,q,t,u,v,w,x,y,zで始まる単語を取り上げていないことが分かりました。

思いつきで１日１語を取り上げているので、均等に分布しないのは当たり前ですが・・・。

そこで今日は"j"で始まる単語を取り上げてみます。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、名詞の項に、"jetsam"という定義も出てきます。そこで、jetsamを検索すると、今度は"See Usage Note at flotsam"とあります。"flotsam"の項で、Usage Noteをチェックしますと、jetsamとflotsamの違いが詳述されています。どちらも海事に関する法律用語として厳密な意味を持つようなのですが、flotsamは難破した船舶の漂流物を指すのに対し、jetsamは海難に際して捨てられた積荷、またその結果沈んだり漂着したものを指す、という違いがあるようです。要は漂流物が難破（遭難）の結果なのか否かというところでしょうか？

Usage Noteは、いずれの語もあまり厳密な境界なく使用されていると結んでいます。

日常生活でこだわることはまずありそうにない単語類ですが、このようにエントリを”ハシゴ”していくのは辞書をひく醍醐味でもあります。

The plane was "a rickety thing," she said, and soon after takeoff the warning lights malfunctioned and the pilots could not tell if the landing gear was working. "Eventually they jettisoned the fuel and prepared to crash land," she said. "They put foam all over the runway and every ambulance and fire fighter truck from Kansas City was there. The entire airfield was a blur of flashing lights." The plane landed safely.
