堪忍袋の緒が切れた ― end of rope

先日は寒波のさなかにある日本列島と対照的に、暑さにあえぐ南半球オーストラリアのニュースから引用しましたが、本日も夏を感じさせる話題からの引用です。


Police say fining beachgoers who refuse to swim between the flags may be impossible in the wake of yet another drowning on the Gold Coast.

A 35-year-old Brisbane man on a day trip with friends was found floating face down in the water by an interstate tourist about 3.45pm yesterday. He has become the third person to drown on Glitter Strip beaches this summer after desperate attempts to revive him failed.

This morning, Gold Coast police Superintendent Jim Keogh said authorities were reaching the end of their rope with swimmers who flouted warnings about the dangers of unsupervised water.

He admitted controlling rogue swimmers was a tough task and the imposition of fines would be a huge undertaking.

という訳語が見えます。進退窮まる状況、万策尽きた状況を指すようです。ロープでつながれた状態でそれ以上先に進めないことの比喩という説明になるほどと思いました。

一方、American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

The limit of one's patience, endurance, or resources

とあり、少し違うのですが、これはまさしく、

堪忍袋の緒

のことではないかと・・・。
