豆をこぼすと大変！ ― spill the beans

今日取り上げる成句ですが、


秘密をばらす、漏らす、暴露する


という意味で辞書にのっています。逐語訳すると、豆（beans）をこぼす（spill）という意味ですが、豆をこぼしてしまうのが、何故秘密を暴露することにつながるのか？という気もします。

辞書によっては、“うっかり”漏らしてしまう、というようなニュアンスを持たせているものもあります。私にはこの方がしっくり来ます。お豆ののった皿（でもボウルでも何でもいいですが）を慎重に運んでいたところが、ヘマをしてうっかりこぼしてしまった、結果、豆が四方八方にころがり・・・、というイメージはうっかりしゃべってしまったがために、秘密がたちまち公然のものとなってしまうイメージとぴったり一致します。

色々調べてみたのですが、このイメージが正しいかどうかは正直なところ分かりません。でも、そんな感じがしませんか？
