キム・ヨナ、Kim Yuna, Kim Yu-Na, Kim Yun-A, Kim Yeon-A???

最初にお断りしておきますと、この記事のタイトルは、私がキム・ヨナのファンだから彼女の名前を連呼している、というものではありませんので、誤解なきよう・・・。

バンクーバーオリンピックの女子フィギュアスケートで金メダルに輝いた、”キム・ヨナ”選手について、英字新聞での名前のスペリングにバリエーションがあるようです。調べてみると、確かに各紙で違っています。


I had a nice email from a Korean reader who suggested that the phonetic -- or transliterated -- spelling being used in English for his country's great figure skating star, Kim Yu-Na, was incorrect.

He said it should be Kim Yun-A or Kim Yeon-A, because it is as much a pronunciation issue as a spelling issue, and there should not be a break after the ``u'' sound.

I replied to the emailer that the English-language media has taken the Yu-Na spelling from the way her name is listed by the International Skating Union.
