オート三輪と人力車 ― autorickshaw

という見慣れない単語にお目にかかりました。英和辞典を引くと、


（インドの）オート三輪


とありました。"auto-"は"automobile"としてお馴染みですが、"rickshaw"は何？

答えは、”人力車”です。発音が何となく似ていますね？

"rickshaw"というエントリは、Oxford English Dictionaryでも19世紀から存在するようです。"ricksha"というスペルもあるようですが、"jinrikisha"（人力車）の短縮形として、立派な英単語の1つです。


MUMBAI: Today will be just another day at work for Anita Kudtarkar. But the 50-year-old auto driver from Vasai is aware that she has stormed a male bastion—she is probably the first and only woman autorickshaw driver in the entire Mumbai metropolitan region.

“After I took up driving autos eight years ago, the municipal council trained around 50 women to drive autos. But till today none has got onto the driver’s seat," says Anita, a resident of Dosti Paradise in Manikpur, Vasai (west).

The need to tide over financial hurdles combined with her love for driving steered the SSC-educated Anita to approach local driving schools for lessons in 2002. “I was turned down by many; finally, a local driver took up the challenge," she says with a smile.

ところで、オート三輪は文字通り”三輪”ですが、人力車は”二輪”を人が引いて走るものなので似て非なるものだと思うのですが、人力車である”rickshaw"が三輪の乗り物を表現する単語に”昇格（？）”したのは興味深く思われます。
